🚨 Something unusual is happening inside Indian household finance.

Gold-backed borrowing is EXPLODING.

As of July 2026:

🏦 Banks: ₹5.52 lakh crore gold-loan book
🏦 NBFCs: ~₹3.54 lakh crore
🔥 Combined: ~₹9.1 LAKH CRORE

And look at the growth:

• Bank gold loans: +88% YoY
• NBFC gold loans: +68.5% YoY
• Overall NBFC credit growth: just +14.9%

Gold loans have become one of the fastest-growing parts of Indian credit.

Since March 2024, gold loans have grown at ~42% CAGR — nearly 2X the growth rate of overall non-housing retail credit.

Why?

Rising gold prices make every gram of household gold capable of supporting a larger loan.

But there's a deeper question:

When households increasingly convert jewellery sitting in lockers into working capital…

Is this simply smarter collateralised borrowing?

Or is gold quietly becoming India’s emergency household ATM?

India’s gold holdings were always viewed as dormant wealth.

Now they are rapidly becoming COLLATERAL.

That shift deserves far more attention.
