Japan is planning a blockchain-based system for real-time settlement of stocks and Japanese government bonds, with the Financial Services Agency, Ministry of Finance, Bank of Japan and financial institutions working together on the project. A development plan is expected by early 2027, with full implementation potentially arriving in the 2030s.

Japan currently settles stock trades two days after execution, while Japanese government bonds generally settle the following day. A blockchain-based system could move those transactions towards near-instant settlement, allowing investors to reuse capital much faster.

The FSA is supporting experiments that use blockchain to transfer ownership of government bonds, corporate bonds, investment trusts and equities, while linking the securities transfer with payment through stablecoins.

The bigger change is that blockchain is moving beyond crypto trading.

If delivery-versus-payment can happen simultaneously on-chain, settlement risk and back-office work could fall sharply. Longer term, Japan believes this could support 24/7 securities trading and make its markets easier for overseas investors to access.

Japan isn't putting stocks on a crypto exchange. It's rebuilding financial settlement with blockchain underneath it.
