The creator of Linux just publicly called out the AI hype. Word for word.

Linus Torvalds took the stage at Open Source Summit 2026 and said this:

"When I see people saying 99% of our code is written by AI, I literally get angry. Because those same people — I can pretty much guarantee — 100% of their code is written by compilers. But they never say that."

He is not anti AI. The Linux kernel saw a 20% jump in submissions this release because of AI tools. He uses it. He gets it.

His point is something most people are too afraid to say.

AI is a productivity tool exactly like compilers were. Compilers boosted programming by 1000x. AI adds another 10x on top. Enormous. But nobody says "the compiler wrote my code." So why are we saying AI wrote it?

He also flagged something nobody is talking about.

AI is flooding small open source projects with drive-by bug reports. Someone runs a prompt, files a report and disappears when asked for a patch. Maintainers with one or two people are drowning trying to keep up.

"Sometimes AI reports a bug and when you ask for more information the person has done that drive-by and does not even answer your question. That is the real burnout issue."

And his final warning was the sharpest of all.

"People who do not understand the complexity of systems will prompt systems and write processes that will fail."

The AI hype crowd is very loud right now.

Linus has been building real systems for 35 years. When he talks, engineers listen.

Nun einfach mal mit KI berechnen, wann die Initiative wirklich greifen würde. Dann sieht man, dass das ganze eben nachhaltig und kein Chaos ist.

Aber die meisten Schweizer scheinen sogar zu blöd zu sein, eine KI zu benutzen. Je nach Szenario, muss erst in 4-6 Jahren gehandelt werden und die Bevölkerungszahl von 10 Mio. wird sogar erst 2040 erreicht.

From my post, Elon commented, guessing at 100M sq ft:

“100M sq ft is the right order of magnitude”

That’s not a precise number— it’s a bounding statement.

More like:

“hundreds of millions, not tens of millions or billions.”

In other words:

10M is clearly too small
1B is clearly too large
So the answer lives somewhere in between, centered around ~100M

This is classic first-principles sizing. Define the extremes, then converge on the middle.

And right now, we’re still in that unknown phase of Terafab.

What matters isn’t the number, it’s the direction

If anything, the real goal is probably: < 100M sq ft

Not because demand won’t justify more, but because efficiency will try to compress it.

That compression comes from innovation.

We’ve seen this playbook before

Think about Cybercab manufacturing— the so-called unboxed process.

That was a direct response to a simple observation:

Traditional production lines waste space.

So Tesla rethought the layout entirely— bringing major assemblies together in a far denser, more parallelized way. Less conveyance, less dead space.

Result: dramatically higher factory density.

Now apply that to Terafab

Get ready for: Unboxed, round two — fab style.

If Tesla can do to semiconductor manufacturing what it did to vehicle assembly, the constraint won’t be “how big can we build it?”

It’ll be: how much can we compress into a given footprint.

And that’s how you end up with something that should be 100M sq ft… but maybe doesn’t need to be.
