#OnThisDay in 2008, Sir Edmund Hillary passed away aged 88. Sir Ed was one of history’s most celebrated mountaineers, explorers and humanitarians.

A defining part of New Zealand’s Antarctic history, Sir Ed lead the Ross Sea support party during the Commonwealth Trans-Antarctic expedition (1955-1958), laying crucial supply depots to assist British adventurer Vivian Fuchs FRS make the first crossing of Antarctica.

He was the first person to reach the South Pole overland since Amundsen (1911) and Scott (1912) and the first ever to do so on motored vehicles. His decision to push on towards the Pole sparked tension within the crossing party, arriving 16 days ahead of the overall commander of the Commonwealth Trans-Atlantic expedition, Fuchs. When told not to proceed to the South Pole, Hillary responded with, “if an explorer in the field always waited for permission from his committee at home, then nothing would get done or it would be done too late. Time spent sitting around at depots was just time wasted.”

We were honored to have Sir Ed serve as the Trust's Patron, supporting our work to conserve the history of exploration and scientific discovery in Antarctica. Our current Patron Rt Hon Helen Clark ONZ, who was Prime Minister of New Zealand until the year of Sir Ed's passing, described it as “a profound loss to New Zealand”.

We honour Sir Ed not only for his incredible achievements, including being the first person to reach both Poles and the summit of Everest, but also for his humanitarian work in Nepal and the countless medals he earned throughout his lifetime.

#OnThisDay in 1915, water began pouring into Shackleton's expedition ship 'Endurance'. Shackleton was leading the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition (1914-1917) with the objective of attempting to make the first land crossing of the Antarctic continent. However, the ship had become trapped in the sea ice and the men had been living on the ship for months as the pressure from the ice began to slowly crush it.

A few days later, on 27 October, Shackleton gave the order to abandon ship. All provisions and equipment were transferred to camps on the ice before the ship disappeared into the depths of the Weddell Sea a month later on 21 November. The men drifted north for months on their ice floe camp, and any ambition of crossing Antarctica dissipated. The mission had become one of survival and sparked one of the greatest polar adventures of all time.
