Also you can BE the organizer at the conference! If nothing is happening then just shout “meet at the bar at 5pm” or wherever, send everyone an email. Everyone is always looking for places to go or to know what others are doing. If there are no plans YOU can make it happen!
Importantly, in these sessions people will often announce happy hours/dinners. GO TO THESE THINGS if you can. Find the group extrovert (there’s always one—if you’re ever in one of mine, find me). This person will introduce you to people/chat your ear off. /11
Really appreciated this thoughtful and expansive review of Shadows of Doubt by @AmandaYAgan, much more than a review really, covers a lot of interesting ground
I hope you find it useful (though it was completed a while ago, so apologies for recent relevant papers that are not included). Thanks @sndurlauf for the opportunity to write it!
My review article "Racial Disparities in the Criminal Legal System: Shadows of Doubt and Beyond" is finally out in the JEL! This article was a real labor of love. A mixture of broad overview and review of the thought-provoking book by Brendan O'Flaherty & @rajivatbarnard

HCEO member @AmandaYAgan and colleagues find consistent evidence that removing a criminal offense from records does not improve labor market outcomes. Gig work through online platforms is an exception.

This super thorough paper uses multiple natural experiments + incredible administrative data to measure how sealing criminal records affects employment (FCRA rules and Clean Slate policies). Punchline: if you care about this issue, it's probably time to look for other options.
