I'm delighted to announce that I'll join @MITEECS as an Assistant Professor next Fall! I will be recruiting graduate students this cycle, please apply if you're interested in the science of deep learning! Despite the ambient doomerism, now is a great time to do research.
Controlling neurons with light feels like pure sci-fi, yet optogenetics has transformed modern causal inquiries in neuroscience. In my research, I build computational models to predict neural activity under these exact manipulations. Huge congrats to these amazing scientists!
BREAKING NEWS
The 2026 #NobelPrize in Physiology or Medicine has been awarded to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel “for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics.”
This September, I will join the @FlatironInst Center for Computational Neuroscience as a Group Leader, where I will launch the High-Dimensional Dynamics & Computation Group.
Info for postdocs and grad students is forthcoming.
I am grateful to my mentors who made this possible!
⚠️ Update: The internet blackout in #Iran is entering its 17th day after 384 hours. Over the last day a decline has been tracked in reserved telecoms network infrastructure, further reducing VPN availability and sending some whitelisted users and NIN services offline.
We are recruiting PhD students and postdocs at UIUC ECE interested in learning dynamics, spiking networks, and dynamical systems. Details: https://t.co/Ge1hy1EC5K
Secretary @marcorubio
Iranian immigrants have long contributed to the U.S. economy, especially in STEM, medicine and AI. Most strongly oppose the Islamic regime and support the goal of a strong and secure USA under President Trump and your leadership.
Over the past few months, many have faced serious hardship due to the USCIS hold. They are here legally and often hold advanced degrees. Returning them to Iran would place them in danger and risk sending highly trained experts in strategic fields back to the Iranian regime.
We would greatly appreciate it if you could revisit this decision.
Thank you for your consideration.
.@UNHumanRights on #Iran 🇮🇷 :
"The killing of peaceful demonstrators must stop.
We urge the Iranian authorities to halt immediately all forms of violence and repression against peaceful protesters and to restore full access to the internet and telecommunication services."
The family of a 26-year-old Iranian man arrested within the last few days during the regime’s crackdown on protests have been told he will be executed, according to the Norway-based Hengaw Organization for Human Rights which focuses on rights violations in Iran.
Despite the Iranian authorities blocking communications Hengaw says his family was able to reach them and share his story, hoping international pressure can help save Erfan Soltani. CBS News has not been able to verify their account.
Neural dynamics are complex, varying in time and across experimental conditions.
🎉 Excited to share our #NeurIPS2025 work: we introduce Conditionally Linear Dynamical Systems (CLDS) as an interpretable and flexible model of neural dynamics.

@SuryaGanguli@Stanford This is a fantastic list! Not sure how directly relevant this would be, but my recent paper is on identifiability (and mechanistic interpretability) of neural dynamics using interventions. Here's a tweet post: https://t.co/FlE4XFBesc
Pleased to announce that our paper on "Identifying Neural Dynamics Using Interventional State Space Models" has been selected for a poster presentation in #ICML2025. Please check the thread for paper details (0/n).

In electrophysiological recordings from the monkey prefrontal cortex during electrical micro-stimulation, we show that iSSM generalizes to unseen test interventions, an important property of identifiable models (8/n).
