Mobile phones across the UK received a loud 10-second alert today as part of a government test of the national emergency alert system.

Designed to warn people in life-threatening situations such as extreme weather or terror attacks, the system temporarily disrupted some events, including a rugby match, and drivers were cautioned in advance.

Officials say the test helps ensure the system will work effectively when it is most needed.”
