Anyway please learn that AIIMS follows duty hours as per residency scheme guidelines 1992 which stipulated 48 hours work week, maximum 12 hours in a day and a week off.

Long & illegal duty hours of resident doctors puts patient care at risk. Poor patient’s health care shall be our top priority and we shall not compromise on it due to pressure from law breaking seniors or HoD.

1. If any senior PG forces you to work in inhumane duty hours that puts patients’ safety at risk please call UGC anti ragging help line 1800-180-5522.

2. If a toxic HoD  / consultant or any faculty forces you to work long illegal duty hours that puts patient care under risk, please complain at the police station, NMC and CPGRAM for the legitimate interests of patients and to ensure smooth patient care

Please look at the RTI response of PGIMER, Chandigarh to Dr.Hariharan who has been battling for justice for the past one year. First the PGIMER fails to recognize him as a current resident doctor

Secondly it says duty hours of residents shall not normally exceed 12 hours. I wonder what kind of manipulation of language is this.

Exceptions may arise due to patient care exigencies and institutional requirements.

What is the definition of patient care exigency? Earthquake, fire accident, pandemic or toxic HoDs unwillingness to implement duty hour rules?

How does such exigency exist only for resident doctors all 365 days round the clock not for other staff?

What are the institutional requirements that may demand squeezing of resident doctors 24 to 36 hours?
Then the response takes us to a nodal faculty member from psychiatry department for mental health support, Sports complex, swimming pool & gymnasium

How a resident can go for Gym & swimming pool whereas he struggles to find time to sleep & eat? Is PGIMER mocking the pain of suffering PG children?

So pathetic? PGIMER has no backbone to tell us to strictly follow residency scheme guidelines. It indirectly says we squeeze residents till their mental health is destroyed and we appoint a faculty from psychiatry to handle him.

Resident doctor conditions of PGI were exposed by TOI. Still it fails to fix the cruel & inhumane duty hours of resident doctors. Instead of that it is playing with words and escaping through loopholes

PGIMER shall realize that the awareness among parents and students is increasing and it can’t exploit residents doctors as per the willingness of incompetent& law breaking HoDs

Time has come for PGIMER to implement residency guidelines strictly than presenting a fake narrative using decorative English words.

A miracle in Indian medical education history.

One clinical department of a government medical college in India has strictly implemented 48 hours work week in reality unlike AIIMS & JIPMER that has it only on a A4 sheet and website not on the ground.

One bold & humane HoD made it happen

Our Nation has 650 medical colleges that offer PG medical courses in various clinical and non-clinical branches

But can you tell anyone in any clinical department in any one these 650 medical colleges follow government norms of 48 hours work week with a week off?

Radiology department of BJ government medical college Pune proved that a 8 hours duty schedule is possible for resident doctors and strictly following from last week

This is a major achievement for those working hard to regulate irrational duty hours of resident doctors

Let’s appreciate the sincere efforts of the HoD , Dr.Shephali S. Pawar for creating a hope that legal duty hours are possible to be implemented and our suffering children can have work life balance soon.

Definitely her action is the starting point to eliminate toxicity from Indian medical education and she deserves praise. This is about willingness, management skills, obeying the law of the land and much about humanity & work ethics.

But unfortunately other departments of the same colleges too made such 8 hours shift duty rosters for the sake of pretending but not following. I wish these Institutes of national importance that are bragging and boasting of high ranks take a leaf out of her book to ensure legitimate interests of patients and resident doctors

Time has come for all resident doctors to demand legal duty hours which is denied in the pretext of understaffing & exigencies for the past 30 years

Once again my sincere thanks for Dr. Shephali S. Pawar Ji for her bold initiative to ensure a work life balance for our young resident children

We all shall congratulate her so that other departments as well as colleges across India gets a will to do the same.

Doctors: “Okay fine. Then give us good infrastructure and all the necessary resources so we can provide the best possible care.”

Govt: “No, but we’ll make sure you keep working in those pathetic conditions, and if you don’t, our people will come and thrash you.”

Doctors: “Okay fine. Then at least give us Central Protection Act and proper security.”

Govt: “No, we’ll make sure your life becomes hell.”

Doctors: “At least give us working hours that are humanly possible.”

Govt: “Talk to NMC.”

NMC: “We’ll draft a letter and never ensure its implementation.”

Doctors: “To hell with it. I’ll start my own private setup.”

Public: “Ye sabke sab lootere hain, chor hain… maaro inko.”

And then people wonder why good doctors are leaving the system.

Extreme human right violation in the form of inhumane duty hours at AIIMS Nagpur Paediatrics

Dear parents please be aware of cruel reality that is confessed on record. On record mein itna cruel hai tho off paper mein hamara bachon ko kya hoga?

Residency scheme issued by Ministry of health & family welfare in 1992 caps 48 hours a week for a junior resident which is 192 hours a month whereas law violators forces at AIIMS Nagpur squeezes our children 540 hours a month with 15 times 24 hours duties

No shame!!!! No fear!!!!No guilt!!!! No humanity at all!
Where are the regulating bodies and human rights commissions?

Do people at AIIMS Nagpur have special powers to break government norms and crush our young children for 24 hours cruelly multiple times??

I kindly request doctor associations, freelancers, human right organizations, any responsible citizen to take this matter very seriously and do something to save our children from deaths and quitting

Now the same AIIMS tell duty rosters contains personal information of residents. So it can’t be disclosed.
Last year the duty roster of AIIMS Nagpur was public document and I have it. This year it has become a private document

What kind of personal information of residents a duty roster can have except name? Contact Number, E-mail Id, blood group or address? Nothing. Nothing

This is just a lame excuse to deny information. Also 98% duty rosters across India do not have any duty timings. They have only resident’s name and posting location

That’s 18 hours every single day, across an entire month.

How can anyone expect safe, error-free patient care from doctors pushed to this extent? Sleep deprivation isn’t dedication—it’s a patient safety risk and a human rights issue.

Healthcare cannot run on the exploitation of young doctors.

AIIMS Nagpur, Department of Pediatrics must explain how such duty hours are justified.

We, as doctors, continue to work in environments where our safety is repeatedly compromised. Despite facing assaults, many of us return to the same workplaces, often without adequate security measures in place.
No medical professional should be expected to serve in institutions that fail to provide even basic protection.
When individual doctors raise their voices or take a stand, they face severe criticism.
Should the medical community choose to protest, we risk being unfairly labelled and discredited.
The Indian Medical Association (IMA) has not taken a sufficiently firm position on this issue.
It is deeply concerning that doctors are consistently held responsible for systemic failures and the decisions of politicians and babus. This pattern must end.
We must now demand the enactment of a Central Protection Act to safeguard healthcare professionals. It is high time that doctors are no longer taken for granted.

India’s healthcare system is structured in such a way that doctors in government hospitals routinely see 150–300 patients a day.
They often skip meals to finish OPD on time, only to then attend to the wards afterwards.
A single mistake can land you on the list of “negligent doctors.” The media and public quickly turn against you, painting you as the villain of society.
No one asks why patients or their attendants assaulted you on duty.
No one notices when you work 36 to 72 hours at a stretch.
No one questions why you remain exhausted and grossly underpaid.
