New essay! @dorontaussig and I dive deep into the emotional power of right-wing storytelling and the limits of “disinformation” as frame to understand it. https://t.co/TlOBbNFjGe

In Journalism Studies, @amnadler and I argue that right-wing news is competing with journalism over the cultural authority to tell the “true” story of public life.

As labor halls and civic spaces have vanished, progressive civil society has become a professionalized shell of its former self. https://t.co/nBHLREhd8z
The disintegration of working-class institutions and the rise of professionalized advocacy has severed the connections between progressive civil society and working-class communities. The Democratic Party alone can’t and won’t fix this. https://t.co/nBHLREhd8z
This in @CJR is probably the most nuanced and realistic article I have read on local newsrooms dealing with angry conservatives. https://t.co/CokP9pJRc6

Great to see this! Newton draws on a piece by @dorontaussig and I from @LAReviewofBooks to call for a broader approach to countering digital propaganda.

One of the better pieces essays I have read about "the persecution narrative’s thematic centrality and emotional power."
It's long, but recommended.
@danwilliamsphil I like the way you worded it in this post. I think there's a need for a better understanding of the causal pathways that lead to both beliefs and loyalties associated with the right. Both the disinformation framework and the culture war framework simplify too much.
@Ted_Underwood @dan_sinykin Yes, this research adds a really important layer to understanding. I try to bring some of the humanistic and more empiricist work here: https://t.co/N9aYUyRPkF
The left mocking this song at its peril. Look passed it’s ideological contradictions & look toward its workingclass emotional pull. It leads to right-wing conclusions (e.g., anti-welfare) but dwell on how it takes the listener from an anti-rich sentiment to get there. This is key
@mlamont6 Often, the progressive response refuses to recognize any threat of stigma. I don't think this is a moral failing of the left - I certainly understand the desire to focus on what you most care about. But it is a major strategic failing.
If you want to understand how conservatives are being shamed by progressives and liberals, read this excellent analysis.
As I argue in #SeeingOthers, figuring out new ways to acknowledge the dignity of workers will be central to the outcome of the 2024 presidential election. This is urgent. The time is now.
@mlamont6 The strategy is often straightforward. Amplify and agitate the feeling among a group that they are being threatened with stigma and shame from progressives – then swoop in claim to be their champions, fighting for their dignity.
