FAA Statement
The Federal Aviation Administration issued an Emergency Airworthiness Directive (EAD) for certain Airbus A319 and A320/321 airplanes.
The EAD requires replacing or modifying the software that controls the airplanes’ elevator ailerons. The EAD is effective immediately. Operators must perform the work before the airplane flies again by 12:01 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 30.
The EAD also prohibits installing the affected software on any aircraft.
The FAA’s action mirrors an EAD from the European Union Aviation Safety Agency, which certificates Airbus airplanes.

EASA has issued an Emergency Airworthiness Directive (AD) effective 29 November to
ground AIRBUS A319, A320 and A321 aeroplanes until a software update can be installed.
To address this potential unsafe condition, Airbus issued the AOT, providing instructions to install a serviceable ELAC.
Reason:
An Airbus A320 aeroplane recently experienced an uncommanded and limited pitch down event.
The autopilot remained engaged throughout the event, with a brief and limited loss of altitude, and the rest of the flight was uneventful. Preliminary technical assessment done by Airbus identified a malfunction of the affected ELAC as possible contributing factor.
This condition, if not corrected, could lead in the worst-case scenario to an uncommanded elevator movement that may result in exceeding the aircraft’s structural capability.
