COPE RALLIES BEHIND BAFANA BAFANA AHEAD OF FIFA WORLD CUP OPENER
The Congress of the People (COPE) extends its full support and best wishes to Bafana Bafana as they prepare for their opening match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup against Mexico today.
This highly anticipated fixture revives memories of the historic 2010 FIFA World Cup, when South Africa and Mexico faced each other in the tournament's opening match on African soil. Sixteen years later, Bafana Bafana once again has an opportunity to showcase South African talent and determination on football's biggest stage.
COPE calls on all South Africans, regardless of political affiliation, race, religion, or background, to unite behind the national team. The FIFA World Cup remains a powerful symbol of national unity, bringing people together under one flag and one common purpose.
"This match against Mexico is about more than football. It is an opportunity for Bafana Bafana to inspire the nation, showcase the strength of South African football, and remind us of the unifying power of sport," said Erick Mohlapamaswi, COPE's Acting General Secretary.
As Bafana Bafana takes to the field, they carry the hopes of a nation and the pride of the African continent. COPE wishes the team success throughout the tournament and encourages them to seize this moment, make history, and fly the South African flag high.
Good luck, Bafana Bafana. South Africa stands with you.

Catch Pakes Dikgetsi live this morning on VOW FM at 09H45 as he discusses South Africaโs worsening unemployment crisis and the urgent need for sustainable economic interventions and job creation.
South Africaโs official unemployment rate has reportedly risen to 32.7% in the first quarter of 2026, with youth unemployment remaining one of the countryโs biggest socio-economic challenges @VOWFMNEWS@COPE_RSA@pakesdikgetsi@LoateTeboho@Loate11@COPE_RSA
Behind South Africaโs unemployment statistics are REAL PEOPLE:
graduates without opportunities,
parents unable to feed families,
businesses collapsing,
communities trapped in crime and hopelessness.
South Africans need jobs and dignity โ not permanent political drama. #Unemployment #YouthUnemployment
