Prominent Palestinian pediatrician Dr. Hussam Abu Safia, the director of northern Gaza’s Kamal Adwan hospital, has been transferred to a maximum security isolation cell barely larger than one meter by one meter. According to Physicians for Human Rights Israel (PHRI), the 53-year-old physician has been held for over 500 days without any formal charges under Israel's controversial "unlawful combatants" designation.

While PHRI confirmed he was suddenly handcuffed and removed from Ketziot prison to Ramon prison without explanation, his family states he is currently being held in the notorious Nafha prison facility, where a gag order cloaks all ongoing legal proceedings.

Prior to his complete isolation, a PHRI attorney documented the horrific conditions of Abu Safia’s lengthy imprisonment, which include untreated skin diseases, severe food shortages, and a denial of essential surgery to remove drone strike shrapnel from his thigh. His family notes that the physician was detained on 27 December 2024 solely for refusing Israeli military orders to abandon his patients during an 80-day siege on the medical facility.

At the time of his arrest, Abu Safia was still wearing his medical coat stained with the blood of his son Ibrahim, who was killed by an Israeli drone at the hospital entrance.

The law group PHRI has filed a petition with the Israeli High Court of Justice demanding the immediate release of Abu Safia and 13 other Palestinian doctors currently held under indefinite military detention. In March, UN experts classified his prolonged confinement as a potential act of torture and demanded his immediate release, yet Israeli authorities continue to reject external oversight.

Israel is testing the international reaction by bombing the areas surrounding these schools; if we do not stop Israel from such war crimes, it will soon begin bombing schools in Lebanon that are full with displaced people.
