Burnout in India's public sector banks (PSBs) has reached a critical level. A reduced workforce combined with surging mandates and relentless targets to sell financial products has left remaining staff chronically overburdened. This operational stress is taking a severe toll on the physical and mental health of bank workers across the country.
Causes of the Burnout EpidemicStaffing Shortages: Despite expanding business and a heavier reliance on banking facilities, the PSB workforce has shrunk. Many branches have seen staff numbers drop from 7 to 3 or 4, and over 32,000 vacancies remain unfulfilled.Relentless Targets: Employees face continuous, often unrealistic pressure to meet business goals—such as selling insurance and other financial products—alongside their core duties.Long Working Hours: Daily workloads routinely spill past official hours and weekends, severely damaging work-life balance.Surveillance and Tech Pressure: While digitization aims to ease workloads, it has frequently led to increased surveillance and operational demands on branch staff.
A GM from a PSB has scheduled a physical meeting at a location 100 km away from his place of posting. Furthermore, staff from some branches within the zone will have to travel over 300 km to attend. This action directly contravenes the recent directive from @DFS_India, which ordered all PSBs to implement video conferencing (VC) and adopt austerity measures in response to the national petrol and diesel crisis.

This goes beyond bad management,it is a systematic destruction of employee well-being. We need more than promises, we need an immediate audit of grievance procedures and management conduct.

क्या यही “प्रोफेशनल वर्क कल्चर” है?
यह केवल एक आत्महत्या नहीं बल्कि बैंकिंग व्यवस्था पर बहुत बड़ा सवाल है। Bank of Baroda सहित सभी बैंकों के शीर्ष प्रबंधन को आत्ममंथन करना चाहिए।
बैंक क्रुरता से नहीं, इंसानों से चलते हैं। कोई नौकरी इतनी क्रूर नहीं होनी चाहिए कि एक युवा अधिकारी लिखे “यह दुनिया मेरे लिए नहीं है”

मै बद्रीनाथ से आ रहा था मैसेज आया कि ट्रांसफर हो गया एकदम उल्टा ,चूंकि नेतागिरी करते थे तो उम्मीद थी कि ऐसा होगा ।
क्योंकि GS के पद को छोड़ा था तो RM को दुश्मनी तो निकलना ही था ।
फोन किया तो पहचाना नहीं ।
चिट्ठी पत्री हुई ट्रांसफर पलटा गया लेकिन मैं समझ गया कि समय कठिन आ चुका है
बैंकर भाइयों सो रहे हो कि अपनी बारी का इंतज़ार कर रहे हो? कल बैंक भी तो जाना है, टारगेट भी पूरा करना है.. आज @bankofbaroda का स्टाफ गया है तो कल कोई और वैसे भी बैंकिंग है चलती रहेगी।

When a young banker writes about unbearable pressure, inadequate training, isolation from family, staffing shortages, customer aggression, and a crushing service bond before taking such an extreme step, we must ask:
Did he really lose his life to personal reasons or did a broken system fail him ?
Every such tragedy demands accountability, introspection, and urgent reforms.
Bank employees are not machines.
✔️ Adequate staffing
✔️ Proper training and mentoring
✔️ Humane transfer policies
✔️ Mental health support
✔️ Review of restrictive service bonds
One more condolence message is not enough.
How many more young officers must suffer before employee welfare becomes a priority ?

Was unable to handle heavy workload(he wasnt trained properly).
Customers were nt supportive
Bengal native posted far away.
