When we talk about #lying with our kids we need to tread carefully. A punitive environment can foster dishonesty. Emphasizing the benefits of telling the truth is significantly more effective at promoting honesty than stressing the negative consequences of lying. #SelfReg
Doing OT with adolescents with Asperger's, does anyone have any creative ideas for building motivation and self-esteem via teletherapy - particularly for boys/young men who are into videogames, superheroes, D&D, fantasy stories...ect. thinking of @VdTMoCAFUK flop-proof activities

If we are to cultivate virtue in the youth of today, we need to help them become aware of when and why they are #overstressed; know what to avoid and how to #restore. #SelfReg
I LOVE THIS! Since starting my OT journey, I look at these kinds of things in such a different light. Some of these suggestions may seem like ‘common sense’ but they can have such a genuine impact on our health and well-being 💚
@emmaspellmanOT#OTalk We OTs need to remember, just like we tell our students/children, the best learning + application is done when we are in the green zone, especially when newly qualified. We need to manage our stress levels so we can be the best OTs we can be!
@emmaspellmanOT#OTalk I feel so fortunate to work as an OT in a specialist school where management wholeheartedly value evidence based practice, theory to practice and continuing professional development. It's a culture shift. It's protected time.
@emmaspellmanOT#OTalk on some student placements it felt like practice educators (especially in NHS) were often pressed for time, constantly seeing back to back clients/in survival mode, with very little time left for preparation and concious theory application. OTs need protected planning time
@emmaspellmanOT#OTalk Q5 for learning theory, the use of case studies are incredibly helpful and engaging. Also sharing theoretical discussions with students on sociology and psychology courses as well as speech therapy and physiotherapy courses , would be so good
@emmaspellmanOT#OTalk Q4 sometimes OTs still get confused between theories and models of practice. So one might say for example, 'we do use theory, we use MOHO assessments' , though that is a Model, based on theoretical underpinnings, but it's important to explicitly talk about the theory
@emmaspellmanOT#OTalk Q4 one barrier is not seeing theory application in practice, when OT mentors do not explicitly teach the application of theory- so much learning is done through observation and post-observation discussion.
@emmaspellmanOT#OTalk Q3 A genuine curiousity and love of learning - a desire for competence and confidence as a therapist - knowledge of theories are tools for the therapy toolbox.
@emmaspellmanOT#OTalk Q2 DIR Floortime Theory
People with autism, like everyone, need to engage in warm, connected relationships that support
development of relating, communicating + learning. This includes all parts of a child’s life: parent+child, teacher+student, + children with peers.
@emmaspellmanOT#OTalk Q2 Mismatch theory: developed by P. Gluckman, suggests there is a mismatch between the human stress response system, which developed much earlier in our evolution, + our modern lifestyle, including the kinds of stressors that we deal with + our levels of physical activity
