I don't usually bring religion into healthcare, but guess I should, because people are becoming the exact opposite of what scientific temperament and critical thinking warrants them.

A Hindu couple met me in OPD today.

The man was diagnosed with advanced cirrhosis and liver cancer and was offered liver transplantation as the curative option.

The couple has been doctor shopping exhaustively to hear from at least one physician that the condition could be cured without a transplant. They wanted to wait a few months.

I ask them why wait few months? By word of mouth, the couple found out about a priest at a very famous Christian "miracle healing center" (Kripasanam) who told them that the cancer would be cured through an "intense protocol-based" prayer service (of course for a voluntary fee) and a repeat CT scan done after a month would show it's disappearance. They wanted to try the "safer" way first before the "risky" option.

I asked them if during the next one month, if the disease worsened and the patient landed in the ICU in liver coma, and unable to breathe, would more prayers work or should we give the mechanical ventilator a chance to maintain his life?

The man has decided to opt for liver transplantation as the first option. The wife will undergo tests for liver donation.

Praying does not educate people to make the right choice. Fellow human beings do. Prayers take away your practical approach towards solutions. Prayers only ensure you are stuck in a limbo.

Prayers does not cure liver cancer. Liver transplant surgeons do.
