One realization I’ve made from 20 years on the job: many docs who trained at prestigious centers had to fight for procedures, and came out with a shiny resume but weak skills.
Can’t speak for surgeons, but if you want an ED doc who can intubate a mosquito, can insert a central line eyes-closed in under 30 seconds, and can calmly run multiple codes simultaneously while strolling from doorway to doorway, they typically do not come from the places a layperson would think of.
This is free advice from an expensive psychologist. If you’re an anxious person, do everything for fun. Go to a job interview for fun. Submit documents for fun. Start a blog for fun. Anxiety feeds on importance. Don’t make everything a matter of life and death.
The notion that your doctor's training is an indicator of their skill is a fallacy. There is no medical school, residency or fellowship that always produces flawless doctors. Any graduate of any training program is capable of making mistakes. I've seen big saves and huge errors in doctors from Harvard. Also seen big saves and enormous errors in community docs who trained miles from Ivy league hospitals outside the US.
