"The most amazing achievement of the computer software industry is its continuing cancellation of the steady and staggering gains made by the computer hardware industry." — Henry Petroski (1942-2023)
Today I ran Turbo C++ 3.0 from 1992 in a DOSBox. It runs instantly, compiles instantly, steps instantly, syntax highlights instantly - even though DOSBox is emulating actual 386 speed.
It's crazy how much modern software underdelivers :(
Code signing certificates for desktop apps is an artificially created problem, but a problem nevertheless. It is expensive and frustrating to deal with, has zero non-slimy vendors, and no attention from anyone willing or able to solve it properly.
WOW 👏 That's how to do it 🇨🇳❤️
I'll easy echo and add to Sabrina's message from my 27 years in China:
China is an amazing place to live, and why i still love to live here. I have always felt welcome and have never faced racism during my years, even not during COVID where Chinese social media was filled with Asian hate coming mainly from #USA. On the contrary i have often felt a curiosity towards foreigners, in learning about us and our cultures.
I have furthermore always feel safe no matter what time of day or where i was.
I feel grateful for having experienced China's rise first hand through almost 3 decades. To have witnessed the incredible development all over the country, which have led to continuous increasing living standards, a much higher educational level, better working conditions and so much more.
We are many foreigners in China who thinks the same, some of us with the time to share our experiences here. There IS way too much anti-China sentiments fueled by politicians and western media, to levels i cannot recognize to be same as the country i live in.
#China #Chinese #amazingchina
the mythology from normies about tiktok is insane. they think it’s an ultra powerful spying apparatus, unique in its ability to spy on you. they think it has kernel level hooks into your phone and is listening to you all the time and has access to every piece of data on every device you own
they don’t understand privacy controls on mobile operating systems or how data collection, data analytics, and ML based behavior modeling works. they don’t understand that their behavior is predictable and influenceable without national-security level spying capability
it’s the same shit as the “facebook is definitely using my laptop microphone through the website” except with a huge dollop of technoxenophobia
"What if we took 2-3 months to rewrite the whole thing? Start from scratch, fix all the mistakes we know about, and we will have a clean state, all our problems solved."
There's a divide between engineers who thought about doing this, and those who did it, and it's a big one.
Warning: Advanced phishing attack. Got a pop up on both my iPhone & Apple Watch about password reset. I didn’t take action. Then received call from 1-800-MY-APPLE. Here’s what ensued:
I'm not annoyed by this bug, just mystified by how it happens: somehow, every time I add the sqlite amalgamation — sqlite.c and sqlite.h — to my @PlatformIO_Org project, it adds Doom as one of my dependencies. Easy to work around, but puzzling and also KIND OF HILARIOUS.
