@berglund_oscar I’ve asked the same question. For example what happens to our political models when growth stops? Capitalism, socialism & modern democracy have all been based on the idea of continuous economic growth (since the Renaissance). What happens when this stops?
The NHS is over-burdened because we, as a society, care so little about addressing the social determinants of distress - inequality, poverty, marginalisation, lax opportunity, poor work etc... No single social institution can carry the burden of such wider systemic negligence.
@JDaviesPhD@docrussjackson 💯 agree. The financialization of our economy, and the way in which this has sucked the money and life out of local communities, has contributed hugely to the social distress you describe.
@christopherhope However bad the situation is, @RishiSunak should know it has been made infinitely worse by the form of #Brexit he supported. You reap what you sow.
@christopherhope Definitely paying attention. And that’s why this needs to be attacked. Understanding a stitch-up in the Westminster village doesn’t make it anymore acceptable.
@robertnpalmer@TaxJusticeUK What about abolishing the Upper Earnings Limit for NI? Unlike other taxes, NI is highly regressive, with the marginal rate being lower for those on higher incomes. Have you looked at how much would be brought in by using the 13.25% rate on all incomes over the primary threshold?
Sunak is far too economically right wing for the times - and will carry on with the myth that Brexit is right and will work. It will take longer but, unless he has a Damascene conversion, his failure is guaranteed.
This Orwellian 'Brexit Freedoms Bill' being debated in Parliament today is a bonfire of hundreds of vital laws & regulations which protect nature, workers' rights & conditions, and so much more. It's a deregulatory race to the bottom. It must not pass.
My amendment 👇
@Anna_Soubry Good speech, but failure is baked into everything @RishiSunak will do for as long as the consequences of #Brexit are ignored - it’s like denying the existence of gravity just before jumping off a cliff. We know where the journey ends!
@aBroidy Agree with all of these points. One thing I’d add. I’ve campaigned for Non-Profits with tight or non-existent budget & global blue chips with limitless funds. Generally, the best campaigns flow from creativity & focus demanded by little or no funding. Hunger sharpens your edge!
You didn’t do it as Chancellor @RishiSunak. Now you’re Prime Minister and it’s more important than ever: Tax. The. Ultra. Rich. We can afford it (so can you!) and we want you to do it. Time for the rich to pay fair; our country cannot afford any cuts.
“realism demands that, in extraordinarily challenging economic circumstances, you have to lower barriers to doing business with your largest single market (the EU), not further increase them”
