It is humbling to consider that if we harness just 1 millionth of the Sun’s power for AI, that will be much more than a million times the intelligence of all of humanity
I feel like AI is the actual lived experience of what Thomas Aquinas referred to as “via negativa” — the way of negation. This is the idea that we can’t apprehend the Divine by knowing what it is, but only by knowing what it is not, i.e. negating it.
Applying this logic would mean that the more functions and activities we delegate, i.e. negate, to AI instruments, the more we will come close to knowing the Divine substance, i.e. what truly makes us human.
In this sense, AI will not replace humanity. Instead, it will serve as a filter, helping us distill the true essence of what it means to be human.
Maybe that’s why many of us fear AI. It is the instrument through which we will know our true selves. And knowing your true self can be a scary experience. But also a very liberating one.
