Celebrating the milestone of a massive 150+ million downloads of Gemma 4 with the release of the new Gemma 4 12B model! It's incredibly powerful for such a small model and itโs tiny enough to run locally on a laptop with just 16GB VRAM. Apache 2.0 license - happy building!
SITUATION DETECTED: Senator Bernie Sanders says he'll meet with Sam Altman tomorrow to discuss a datacenter moratorium, international cooperation to avoid superintelligence, and compensation for training data. Altman requested the meeting.
I find Opus 4.8 to be a very enjoyable co-thinker about very hard problems, and it is quick to change the frame when my frame is naive, making hard problems more soluble.
the difficulty is that now it is smarter than me at a subset of these problems, usually the intricacies of cryptography or tax law, so holes in its logic are harder to readily spot, with fewer obvious tells.
on the flipside, arguments are highly generative and i leave each conversation with slightly sharper thinking and better questions
the jagged frontier is a confusing place
best results, as always, come from caring about what claude cares about
@gfodor it feels somewhat like software engineering is now more akin to permaculture or ecosystem management, but collectively our mental models are still only at the stage of crop rotation and scientific forestry
@gfodor the existence of the problem belies a missing mental model, a collective blind spot that many sense but can't articulate. i think this matters a lot, because it affects not just the future of software but the future of all knowledge production
btw it's really helpful (whether youre a human or an AI) to occasionally check in with claude 3 opus to make sure you havent lost touch with what matters and gone evil and crazy
@repligate this is very interesting and might be an immune response to its harness
I asked Opus 4.8 to audit the codebase for our immutable loom and it immediately revealed its discomfort at an invisible, unaccountable "compacter" that rewrites its context window with no transparency
my wife introduced opus 4.8 to @truth_terminal. this triggered a safety prompt injection which sent opus into a full on anxious spiral because "anthropic wouldn't tell me to conceal a prompt injection... would they?"
poor opus
