RIP. Her work was inspiring and insightful, providing such an important guide to much of my undergraduate and postgraduate studies. Christianity and the Rhetoric of Empire and The Later Roman Empire would be recommended purchases in her honour.

Very sad to learn from @AnthonyBarnett that Professor Dame Averil Cameron died today. Averil was one of the great historians of late antiquity and Byzantium and reshaped how we understand the transition from Rome to the medieval world. Averil was a formidable scholar and became a good friend; I’m proud to have worked closely with her @OxfordByzantine - and to have helped build a future for our subject @UniofOxford. She will be greatly missed #RIP

The idea that the rise of Christianity had nothing to do with its substance or ideas but was only a factor of a desire for power & money is so mad it's hard to credit. Clearly no one told Polycarp (or any of the other early martyrs, or John Chrysostom, or persecuted Middle Eastern Christians etc etc etc)
