We don't talk enough about the incentive structures in our venture ecosystem. The anchor LPs in Africa's funds (DFIs) have little to no individual incentives around returns.

* Removing returns-based financial upside / downside from venture capital creates a risk-less LP class and end goals become much more process-oriented.

* This can (but doesn't always) set the tone for GP prioritization around riskless income (fees) vs. risk-aligned income (returns). Historically, there's been very little return pressure.

* Why? Funds are getting re-upped by default. LPs in a riskless environment will maintain the status quo. Ease-of-process > performance.

* But, we are investing in the riskiest markets in the world. Navigating and manipulating that risk is exactly why Africa has so much potential in the first place.

* By stripping risk-based incentives out of our ecosystem from the top down, we sanitize the reality of how brutal (and amazing) venture in Africa actually should be.

* We should see more failures, more quickly. We should see investors get tested more thoroughly and founders also as a result. We should see a sense of urgency and desperation to squeeze water out of stone that these markets demand. We all know this isn't the standard today.

Africa has the most risk-detached funder ecosystem in the world investing in the riskiest startups in the world. As a new wave of tech is about to sweep over the continent, this must change.
