Sea King 42 B - A Glorious Legacy Folks, on Sunday 14 Jun, I had the previlege of witnessing a poignant moment in @indiannavy history - the number plating of #INAS330 & the retirement of the #SeaKingMk42B helicopter. Earlier last week, I had the pleasure of interacting with two Seaking stalwarts, Rear Admiral PG Philipose (Retd) (@Pop_Eye64) & @Cmde_GPrakash. Folks, earlier this week, on 21 Jul, I had the honour of speaking to Naval War College, @InNwc participants on the 'History of the Indian Navy'. While I have the privilege of conducting this talk every year at the beginning of the course, this year it was special because the audience included participants of 4 courses running in parallel at the College - the Naval Higher Command (NHCC), Indian, the first Naval Higher Command course for Foreign Students, (NHCC F), the Naval Staff and Technical Management Course (NSTMC) and the Maritime Security Course (MSC). The nearly 150 audience included Senior Officers from Indian Navy, the @adgpi , @IAF_MCC, the @IndiaCoastGuard , Defence Civilian Officers as well as 24 Officers from friendly foreign nations. Normally, I do these series of talks on Naval/Maritime history and related topics physically in the lecture halls to feel the buzz. This is particularly accentuated in the Naval War College where the settings of the Chola building are magnificent and the academic ambience of the highest quality. However, this time, the talk was in an online mode owing to minor indisposition at my end. That notwithstanding, it was good to see the response and high quality of interaction that followed. By flagging off the Higher Command Course for Foreign Officers and continuing with the MSC, the Naval War College is playing a significant role in Maritime Diplomacy in addition to Professional Military Education (PME). This is in addition to the NWC hosting the annual Goa Maritime Conclave/Symposium and other such events. Over a period of time, this can result in NWC becoming an internationally reputed and much sought after global institution of excellence. As it's first Deputy Commandant, when it moved to Goa in 2012, nothing would make me more happy. Folks, yesterday, 20 Jul, evening, at the iconic Yashraj (@yrf) studios, @zwerubae, my cofounder at @MeluhaMaritime and I, had the singular delight of attending the Launch of the Trailer of #OpSafedSagar, a Netflix Series that will be flagged off on 07 Aug. Safed Sagar, as many here know, was the @IAF_MCC (Air Force) operation during the Kargil Conflict and it's wonderful that their gallant exploits then, especially that of Number 17 Squadron (Golden Arrows), are being brought alive on the screen. The trailer is super awesome and one looks forward to the series. Almost all the lead actors who feature in the series were present during the launch and seemed very well cast. Their responses to questions from media indicated a high level of sincerity and huge respect for what Air Force/Armed Forces did during Kargil and later. But to me, the true value of the evening lay in the wonderful meetings I had with people in uniform or associated with it. That was a major incentive for me to attend and I am happy it was so fruitful. First and foremost, it was a privilege to meet #AirChiefMarshalAmarPreetSingh , the @IAF_MCC boss. Three courses senior to me at NDA, I never encountered him then or later. But he has a huge aura across the services as a highly regarded professional with a humane touch and the five minutes I could get with him showcased that perfectly. A true gentleman with class. It was also wonderful to briefly meet Air Chief Marshal BS (Tony) Dhanoa, the Commanding Officer of 17 Sqn during the Kargil war and humorously telling him about the Navy gate crashing an 'Air Force bash'. Beyond that, I was overjoyed to meet Gp Capt Alok Choudhry and Gp Capt Amit Gupta, both of 17 Sqn, involved in the Operation then and whose characters have been reprised in the Series. Chou is my NDA coursemate and we were meeting after 41 years, while Amit from 87th NDA (Hunter SCC) was my cadet and I his Div Offr in his final term. Both heroes with no airs, they were the toast of the evening. I was also thrilled to catch up with my old friend @tarunsingha (Gp Capt Tarun Singha) and exchange notes with him. Singha like me, is passionate about telling the stories of our Armed Forces using the medium of public culture. He also happens to be my Senior, by a year at NDA, in the same (Delta) Squadron. The most poignant moment for me was meeting with and interacting with #MrsAlkaAhuja , the wife of #SqnLdrAjayAhuja , the Braveheart who went down in the line of duty, during this war. Ajay sir too belonged to my Squadron in NDA and was a year senior. Hearing about his being KIA was a terrible blow to those who knew him. Mrs Alka's presence added immense dignity and grace to the occasion. The few minutes I could spend talking to her were invaluable and her composure throughout the evening was admirable. It was no wonder that she got a standing ovation each time she spoke or was mentioned. That apart, meeting many Veterans and few serving officers from all the services added further to a memorable evening. @NetflixIndia & @MatchboxShots, thanks for the invitation.
