I’ve been meaning to write this for a while. It’s a decade since we got to know each other. He has pulled me into crypto and his nerve to sacrifice short term for what’s ahead is a rare sight especially in crypto.

@madhavanmalolan has contributed to multiple open source projects during his undergrad. And he is awarded gold medal in college. It’s no coincidence we got him onboard as the first engineer at Samosa — my first company.

After exiting from my the company I was at crossroads — figuring my next adventure. @misbahspeaks was on a tirade to set us up. We met and @madhavanmalolan told me he has been dabbling in and out of crypto. And that a non trivial portion of his net worth is in crypto. He had the foresight and conviction to contribute across ecosystems.

Fast forward we wrote 150 tutorials to onboard developers into web3. More than 10 million USD in grants has been given out via @questbookapp We built @reclaimprotocol to let developers prove their credentials pseudonymously (when they apply for grants). It now used across use cases we couldn’t imagine early on.

At one point @madhavanmalolan remarked he would do whatever makes “ETH valuable”. He also truly believed “crypto isn’t cryptocurrency”. I didn’t understand the idealism and how both those can be true at the same time.

I distinctly remember a conversation where I nudged him to make zkTLS work on mobile under ten seconds and without requiring an app install. He didn’t blink and put the whole twenty member team to the task and made this happen. This meant not seeing anything tangible for a year.

This is the sort of bet someone who thinks in terms of risk/reward would avoid. Someone who thinks in terms of quarterly revenues would avoid. Gestation periods for developer tools are long and you can’t win their trust by running ads on social media.

Only someone who is a builder and loves developers can do this. I remember a time when @madhavanmalolan casually walked around hackathons and helped others debug their projects for the love of the game. He is even famous for the “build anything” sessions he did at Cafés.

Long before others saw it he has pulled the trigger and invested in projects leveraging zkTLS such as @P2Pdotme, @zkme_, showdown, @zkp2p and supported numerous other projects. Such projects have collectively raised over 20 million USD. (Lot more action unfolding here and I wish I could say more)

What we are seeing now at @reclaimprotocol is an inflection point in making with a decade of work behind the scenes and years of work by an unflinching team. @madhavanmalolan doesn’t get much public appreciation for it. Looking forward to seeing him unveil next chapter of zkTLS.
