@angpeacock1111 Angie- you are the embodiment of fierce strength and vulnerability. It takes these qualities to live through this type of taper and trauma. I am so honored to know you. You keep inspiring me by simply being you.
@NickTaber It’s such a puncture to their egos. That’s been my experience when I have confronted psychiatrists with withdrawal. It is too threatening for them to actually look at and accept.
@DrMcFillin So well said. Heartbreak, grief, loss, anger, joy… these feelings are too quickly medicated away. As someone prescribed meds for decades, all it did was make me afraid of my human condition. I am now taking that back with a slow and painful hyperbolic taper.
@_innercompass@AlobhaPatrick Looking at the whole person… so opposite from the system. As an LCSW I work from a non-diagnostic model and approach people from a Gestalt and IFS perspective. I no longer work from a diagnostic approach and find the DSM generally damaging to how someone thinks of themselves.
@angpeacock1111 I agree, Angie. And we share the insider education of an MSW. The DSM is unfortunately such a bible in this system- and 100% for psychiatrists. Seeing a person in their context of life is vital and normalizing and even empowering. But this takes time- no profit of pharma.
@dsowens17 I think it is also too painful for doctors to consider that they are causing harm- they going into denial and avoidance and minimizing the patient.
@Melanie84410075 Tapering klonopin was the hardest thing I’ve ever done- but possibly with a slow, slow hyperbolic taper. Benzos should never be prescribed as daily meds… but that’s another story.
@markhoro@Inox94 Ignacio- have you tried to do a linear taper off Duloxitine, which is on this list? Nearly did me in and that’s how I found Mark Horowitz. You may want to talk to some people with lived experience. I have never come off heroin, but not interested in trying that out to compare.
@justin_garson Wouldn’t it be nice to have a blank book where we could just write, draw, or insert an expression of how we feel? Like a journal of humanity instead of the DSM, where all feelings are welcome. And just leave it at that- no need to analyze or dig deeper… and I’m an LCSW.
@Melanie84410075@K3ll3y75@markhoro My doctor didn’t know about tapering- had me do a linear taper off an SNRI which put me in a horrible place and led me to find Dr. H and a wonderful community of humans going through this hell that prescribers don’t seem to acknowledge. I fired that doctor.
@K3ll3y75@Melanie84410075@markhoro It is a shame that many of us who have been harmed by benzos/trying to come off, get no guidance from the prescriber. I found Dr. Horowitz through google searches and the endorsements of other people online who had been harmed. My prescriber said,”I’ve never seen this before.”
@dsowens17 Aren’t meds their main tool/what they have to offer? I imagine it is too threatening on the whole system/their identity if they question medication.
@DrMcFillin I was absolutely told that! And to think- I was paying someone to tell me this… so damaging! So glad I woke up and am tapering and throwing away the messages I was told by these doctors.
@senatorshoshana@nytimes It is such an important article. It is a shame that many of the comments in the NYT are as if this is all anti-psychiatry. There needs to be room for all experiences. Cam’s story, like mine, is about going on meds at a young age and getting lost in a cascade of polypharmacy.
