A7: Sci-fi is kind of off limits to me as a 9th grade teacher. Our 10th grade teachers hit it hard, so they've asked us to step back from sci-fi. That being said I'm able to use it as my entire basis for summer school. #UNDTL528
A5: I adored "Harry Potter" as a child. I still do. I'm always excited to share if with my students and hopefully children of my own some day. It was just such a great escape, but it was still relatable. It was the first book I could see the movie in my head. #UNDTL528
A3: I have never used a graphic novel, but I've since done extensive research in graphic novels. I have several in my shopping cart right now on https://t.co/6Z0UgOK0TW! I'll definitely be bringing them into the fold! #UNDTL528
@Mrs_C_Shields The Little Critter books...I totally forgot about those. I didn't even know the name of that series until I was about 21. The biggest thing I remember from those books is that the big brother was always so sweet to his little sister. #UNDTL528
@Miss_Peden It's amazing how quickly sci-fi can scoop kids into reading. Some of my most disinterested readers are instantly enthralled when I set that sci-fi book down in front of them. It helps that there are a lot of movies to go with them. #UNDTL528
@brhenderson18 I'm slightly embarrassed to say that I never thought of graphic novels as "reading", but I now realize how much work goes into reading them. The notion of time and what happened between the gutters takes some high level thinking! #UNDTL528
@brhenderson18 That's a great idea! I also like the idea of showing students how sometimes genres can overlap with each other depending on elements that are used. #UNDTL528
@JenniferFugles1 I agree. It's tough to see exactly where they could fit in curriculum. I'm sure there are books out there that would fit seamlessly, but I haven't done enough research yet. #UNDTL528
A1: If I must admit, I'm not reading anything for pleasure right now. I'm in the midst of three classes, so I can read for pleasure in three weeks. #UNDTL528
A2: Graphic novels allow students to have that visual component of reading. It can start the move in their head if they don't see it right away. #UNDTL528
A6: Our students spend their entire 10th grade English semester studying sci-fi, so they are aware of what sci-fi elements are. I must admit though, we do not do much in the way of fantasy. #UNDTL528
A4: With my 6th graders, we read "Tale of Despereaux", and we use it in conjunction with "Maniac Magee" to talk about accepting people who are different whether those differences are physical or not. #UNDTL528
A5: We are looking to change novels to one with a character of color as the protagonist. Also, I will use funds to find books with main characters of diverse backgrounds. #UNDTL528
@Mrs_C_Shields I'm also using the books for this class to find literature for students. They're great resources! I've started quite a long list! #UNDTL528
