Dr. John MacDuffie and his wife Abby Parsons MacDuffie acquired Miss Howard’s School in 1890. The Central Street girls’ boarding school promoted academic excellence with practices such as French only spoken at the dinner table. Ms. MacDuffie joined the local suffragette movement.
At 10:00 pm on July 25, 1961, President Kennedy addressed the nation on the brewing crisis in Berlin, discussing the Soviet threat to West Berlin and the imminent threat of nuclear war.

Local architects Gardner & Gardner designed the new Chestnut Street Grammar School in 1901. They purposely followed the colonial style of the nearby “old ladies home” to maintain the standard of architectural beauty in the neighborhood. Compare this view to yesterday’s post.
