@realMeetKevin Selling perpetual license only made sense when the tech was very nascent and mainly just a promise - a loosely related parallel is Microsoft porting over almost all perp licenses to subscriptions over the years through incentives/ deals etc.
@TickerDUBS I believe ultimately vision only is most likely to win - I also believe that Tesla’s manufacturing prowess is a key differentiator in achieving scale. Maybe Waymo switches approach - maybe they license - maybe Chinese do vision only in China - many possibilities still exist.
@TickerDUBS There is a lot I disagree with so let's leave it at that - let's see how this unfolds. Physical + software systems often consolidate more not less. I would also disagree that "Waymo" has already done it - look at their plans to scale and that tells you a lot.
@TickerDUBS I don’t see why lower sensor/compute costs imply fragmentation. Software-heavy markets usually consolidate because scale compounds (better data, better models, better utilization). Add huge capex + safety/regulatory burden and the case for concentration gets stronger, not weaker.
@TickerDUBS BTW, not saying Uber dies. But for it to retain its power, AV supply has to be fragmented enough that fleet owners need an aggregator. I doubt that: AV will be high-capex, scale-driven business w/ few players dominating each geo— they will have little reason to pay Uber rent.
@TickerDUBS BTW Travis understood this (no surprise there) and hence was pushing to build AVs in-house. If he could just easily collect rent because he has the "app", he didn't need to make that effort.
@OverlyTrev Figure’s (and Brad’s) goals are different - people can gauge that by listening to him and analyzing his track record. He is looking for a liquidity event (ie IPO or acquisition) - so he is demo/ marketing focussed. Not sure why it’s not obvious to folks.
@TheEmissaryCo Some communities are notorious - anyone who has lived in NCR for a while knows this. The Indian state (police+judiciary) is exceptionally inept at enforcing the rule of law - it will not protect you and your life may turn upside down if you get stuck in its orbit.
@Christy61671060 Maybe they don’t need to fix all: eg parking has many edge cases so maybe just do roadside drop offs. Geofencing is another way to cut out tail scenarios. Market doesnt need to know its 100% solved - it may not be for a long time - market needs to see rev/ cybercab growth .
@ElectrekCo@FredLambert There is such a thing as cap-ex and carrying risk on the balance-sheet. Also, it’s a good political move to let others participate in profit making - companies like Microsoft deliberately went with that strategy.
