@estherzelda0514 Janet Mills ran an extremely lazy garden porch campaign. Blowing the enormous primary lead was a significant update towards her being a poor candidate. Similarly, the Maine SoS is a clean candidate but she lost by 37 in 2014 so Dems would be dumb to nominate her.

This comes with problems of its own (what happens when the independent agency refuses to listen to the President or Congress?) but at least it stops dictatorship.

@SeanTrende @davidshor @charlescwcooke I agree with you that that's how the Constitution was designed. I also think we're shifting to an era of effectively unchecked executive power. That is not consistent with the goals of the Constitution's design and is a big problem.

@AndyWarrenStein @MariGO2thepolls I think it's reasonable to say voters rejected Mills. The field was cleared for her and then Platner filled the vacuum. Was there really no ambitious state legislator who could raise $500k for the primary and run on 1-2 pieces of signature legislation?

@AndyWarrenStein @MariGO2thepolls I mostly agree. There wasn't really any other candidate on the ballot so it's not quite fair to blame voters for the candidate choice.

@SeanTrende @davidshor @charlescwcooke Congress used to have a tool to weaken a president who ignores legislation --- have an independent agency decide things instead of the president. Without that tool available, impeachment is the only (impractical) option if the president doesn't feel like following the law.

@SeanTrende @davidshor @charlescwcooke Trump is ignoring laws already to prosecute his enemies. What Congress wants to do is have other people run parts of the executive branch instead of Trump. SCOTUS won't let them do that, implying the only remedy is impeachment.
