30,000 marigold seedlings and new opportunities for women farmers!

In Jamda Block of Mayurbhanj district, four women’s Producer Groups (PGs) have transplanted 30,000 marigold seedlings, marking the first step towards commercial flower farming in the area. Supported by the Directorate of Horticulture under the Agriculture Production Cluster (APC) Programme and facilitated by partner VIKASH, the initiative encourages women farmers to diversify their farming activities and earn additional income through marigold cultivation.

Empowering Women Farmers - From Harvest to Market
Women farmers of Maa Binapani Producer Group in Laxmipur village, Reamal Block, Deogarh district, are cultivating brinjal across 18.4 acres under the Agriculture Production Cluster (APC) Programme, supported by the Directorate of Horticulture.

The group has successfully harvested and collectively marketed 426.5 quintals of brinjal, generating ₹11.65 lakh in revenue. By aggregating their produce and bringing it directly to market together, these women have eliminated intermediaries, vastly expanded their market reach, and secured sustainable financial independence for their families.

From a few chickens at home to a regular source of income, poultry rearing is opening up new possibilities for Rasmita Mallick of Dhekalmunda village, Kantamal Block, Boudh district.

With access to healthy chicks from a local Mother Chick Unit, along with vaccines, medicines and proper care, she now rears chickens four times a year and sells them to local vendors. Like Rasmita, other women in her Producer Group are also engaged in poultry rearing, earning approximately ₹50,000 annually. The income helps them meet household needs and support their families.

On 8th October 2026, the Director of Agriculture & Food Production, alongside the Collector & District Magistrate, Rayagada, and other officials, visited Gopikankubadi village in Kolnora Block under the Agriculture Production Cluster (APC) Programme to interact with women farmers engaged in marigold cultivation.

Empowering women farmers through commercial floriculture, a targeted initiative by the Rayagada District Administration is expanding marigold cultivation across APC operational areas. Through cluster-based farming, local women are scaling production, strengthening organized agriculture, and significantly boosting their household incomes.

Farmers of Jay Jagannath Producer Group, Kaptipada (Mayurbhanj), are growing quality saplings in their polyhouse nursery. Supported by the Directorate of Horticulture under the APC Programme and facilitated by Shakti Sikha Development Society, the group is nurturing 15 day old papaya and capsicum saplings and preparing knol khol seedlings, ensuring farmers get quality planting material on time.

As part of the APC Programme, the Commissioner-cum-Secretary, DA&FE, alongside the Collector-cum-District Magistrate, Keonjhar, and senior officials, visited Banspal Block on 4th October 2026 to review rural livelihood initiatives. During the visit, the delegation engaged with members of the Bhumika Producer Group and Banspal Farmer Producer Company (FPC), inspected grafted brinjal and pumpkin crop clusters, and flagged off an inter-state pumpkin shipment to West Bengal.

The Commissioner-cum-Secretary emphasised the imperative for robust supporting infrastructure, modern technology adoption, and post-harvest interventions to enhance farmers’ incomes. He commended the remarkable expansion of the crop cluster from 35 to 691 acres and lauded the commercial growth of Banspal FPC as a shining model of grassroots farmer collectivism.

On 4 October 2026, Shri Sachin Ramchandra Jadhav, IAS, Commissioner-cum-Secretary, Department of Agriculture & Farmers��� Empowerment (DAFE), Government of Odisha, and Sri Vishal Singh, IAS, Collector & District Magistrate, Keonjhar, along with other officials, visited Banspal Block under the APC Programme.
The delegation interacted with members of the Bhumika Producer Group, Banspal FPC, and visited Grafted Brinjal and Pumpkin crop clusters. They also flagged off a shipment of pumpkin from the FPC to West Bengal.

Across 63 Farmer Producer Companies (FPCs) supported by the Department of Mission Shakti in the APC blocks, Annual General Meetings (AGMs) have brought members together to reflect on progress, discuss priorities, and plan for the year ahead.

The meetings provided a platform for farmers, Board members, and other stakeholders to review achievements, share perspectives, and take collective decisions. They also strengthened transparency, accountability, shareholder participation, and institutional governance, while encouraging greater involvement of members in the functioning of their FPCs.

Alongside these discussions, the AGMs also featured cultural events and award recognition, celebrating the participation and contributions of members. Through these platforms, women led institutions continue to strengthen their foundations.

From 18.4 acres of brinjal cultivation, women farmers are turning collective efforts into better market returns.

Over the last one month, women farmers of Maa Binapani Producer Group in Laxmipur village, Reamal Block, Deogarh district, have improved their brinjal cultivation practices and strengthened collective marketing under the Agriculture Production Cluster (APC) Programme, supported by the Directorate of Horticulture and Department of Mission Shakti.

Facilitated by APC Partner CSDR, the Producer Group has harvested 276.5 quintals of brinjal and collectively sold the produce for ₹7.60 lakh so far, helping women farmers reach markets together and earn better from their harvest.

A season of pumpkin and chilli is turning into meaningful earnings for women farmers in Sukruli Block of Mayurbhanj district. Under the Agriculture Production Cluster (APC) Programme, supported by the Directorate of Horticulture and Department of Mission Shakti, women Producer Groups have so far sold 880 quintals of pumpkin worth ₹9.68 lakh and 18 quintals of chilli worth ₹1.08 lakh. With technical facilitation from Indian Grameen Services (IGS), the Producer Groups are strengthening their collective marketing efforts and expanding their reach to markets.

In Danla village of Banspal Block, Keonjhar district, 30 women farmers from the Danla Producer Group cultivated pumpkin across 100 acres during FY 2025–26, supported by the Department of Mission Shakti under the Agriculture Production Cluster (APC) Programme. The women farmers received technical guidance from the Directorate of Horticulture and procured agricultural inputs from Banspal Farmers Producer Company, strengthening their collective cultivation practices. The cultivation across 100 acres has generated around ₹60 lakh in income, contributing to improved livelihoods for the women farmers. Building on the success of the previous season, the women farmers have continued with pumpkin cultivation this year and are expecting good returns from the crop.

Nirbhaya Women Farmer Producer Company Limited (FPC), Sadar Block, Anugola, supported by the Department of Mission Shakti, has distributed 30,000 grafted brinjal and tomato saplings to women farmers under the Agriculture Production Cluster (APC) Programme. This initiative is supporting synchronised brinjal and tomato cultivation, contributing to improved crop quality, higher yields, and enhanced income opportunities for farmers over time.

Through this intervention, APC Partner SIDI is strengthening women-led producer institutions, building the capacity of Producer Groups, and facilitating access to quality planting material and technical support for women farmers.

Rashmita Kirsani of Khadagpur village, Koraput, is strengthening her desi poultry enterprise under the Agriculture Production Cluster (APC) Programme. After receiving 24 days of poultry training under AEPS at APICOL, she started her farm and later adopted a hatching machine to improve chick production and reduce losses.

With around 200 birds, her farm is now supplying chicks to the local community, where demand continues to grow. She plans to expand to around 500 hens and increase production to meet the growing demand.
