International human rights lawyer @JaredGenser describes the scale and severity of violations of Imran Khan's fundamental rights as one of the worst he's ever seen.
“When you look at all these things collectively... these are just flagrant, intentional, and egregious violations of Khan's fundamental human rights.”
Speaking at press conference for global media, Genser noted the following serious issues with the conditions of Imran Khan's detention:
▪︎ prolonged solitary confinement, which is torture under international law
▪︎ confinement to a tiny cell, often for at least 23 hours each day
▪︎ no windows or natural light and ventilation, inadequate artificial lighting
▪︎ extreme heat in the summer and cold in the winter
▪︎ stagnant air, insects, and an open toilet
▪︎ under 24 hour surveillance
▪︎ virtually complete social isolation
▪︎ not permitted interactions with other prisoners or to participate in communal prayer, including Eid prayer
▪︎ repeated denials and restrictions of family visits
▪︎ restricted access to legal counsel, despite indisputable and egregious violations of due process in his trials
▪︎ repeated denials of adequate medical care, and interference in independent and professional medical care
▪︎ conditions of detention have caused 85 percent vision loss in one eye, nausea, weight loss, severe vomiting, and psychological distress
These are violations of local and international laws and Pakistan's commitments under international treaties.

“My brother and I have not been able to visit our father for years. For the past six months, we haven’t even spoken to him. What my father is going through is a violation of his human rights.” - Sulaiman Khan, son of Imran Khan, addressing a press conference.
The Supreme Court has ordered that Imran Khan be allowed to speak with his children. Yet the authorities continue to deny him this basic right, in addition to refusing visas that would allow @Kasim_Khan_1999 and Sulaiman Khan to travel to Pakistan to see their father.

Prime Minister @andyburnham and Foreign Secretary @Ed_Miliband : how much longer will Britain remain silent?
For three years the father of my two sons, and Pakistan’s former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, has been brutally penalised by his political opponents, in a personal vendetta by Army Chief, Asim Munir, which according to the UN, amounts to torture and which is now taking a potentially fatal toll on his physical and mental health.
He has endured 3 years of solitary confinement. For nearly ten months now his family has been denied contact with him. He has been deprived of the most basic human contact, denied access to books, lawyers and doctors.
The international human-rights standards are unequivocal. Under the UN’s Nelson Mandela Rules, solitary confinement lasting more than 15 consecutive days is prohibited and amounts to torture.
He has endured this treatment not for 15 days, but for three years.
Pakistan’s own Supreme Court has now intervened: ordering comprehensive medical treatment, access to his personal doctor, regular family visits and twice-weekly calls with his sons.
Yet those orders are being defied.
This is no longer simply a Pakistani political matter. It is a human-rights emergency.
He has deep and lifelong ties to Britain. He studied at Oxford University, captained Oxford University cricket and spent years playing county cricket in England. His relationship with this country stretches back more than half a century. His charitable activities were internationally recognised, and include building the only free cancer hospital in Pakistan as well as a university.
His sons, my two boys, Sulaiman and Kasim, are British citizens. They have been forced to watch their father’s health decline from thousands of miles away, prevented from visiting him, denied visas, publicly threatened by government officials with arrest themselves, and even denied court-mandated regular phone calls.
I have repeatedly appealed to the UK government to intervene. Purported attempts at back channelling have evidently failed. The previous Foreign Secretary @DavidLammy informed me in writing that Britain would not intervene if my sons, British citizens, are arrested when they travel to Pakistan to visit their father.
@FCDOGovUK: Britain must now speak out publicly and unequivocally. Demand that Pakistan comply with its own Supreme Court; restore Imran Khan’s medical access, his right to see his family, end his prolonged isolation and uphold his fundamental human rights.
Pakistan is a Commonwealth country. Britain has a long and proud tradition of standing against arbitrary detention, inhumane treatment and the denial of fundamental rights. Those principles mean very little if we invoke them only selectively and neglect them when inconvenient.
This an appeal to the new Burnham government to please now do the right thing.

Sister of Pakistan's former PM filed a contempt of court petition against PM Shehbaz Sharif, federal ministers and senior officials, accusing them of violating a Supreme Court order directing authorities to transfer the jailed opposition leader to a private hospital for medical examination and treatment. https://t.co/i4BCT56jDk
🚨 Imran Khan’s health is deteriorating. 🚨
He must be immediately transferred to a hospital.
PTI leadership must take urgent action: hold a press conference, approach the Supreme Court & launch a protest demanding immediate medical care.

No one- lawyers, family, or personal physicians have had access to Imran Khan for months. There has been no interaction with the outside world, @sayedzbukhari said when asked by @mehdirhasan about Imran Khan’s status.
“Any news we get is through his wife Bushra Bibi’s family, who are sometimes allowed to meet her inside Adiala Jail. Imran Khan has lost 85% of his vision, they say he has gotten treatment but we cannot verify it independently. Recently we’ve heard that his blood pressure is turbulent. The news is always depressing and upsetting.”
