This may be the government’s strategy. But protests have acquired a life of their own. No party, neither the BJP’s nor the opposition, can control the momentum now.

[मदन मोहन झा 🇮🇳 | Madan Mohan Jha🇮🇳 @iammmjha]

The BJP’s problem may not be the opposition at all

The New York Times reports that Narendra Modi’s government is running a two-pronged strategy against the youth protests: suppress any mobilisation that echoes the summer’s Gen Z movement, while letting traditional opposition rallies proceed, so the contest can be framed against a familiar rival.

The most revealing voice in the piece comes from within the ideological family. Durga Nand Jha, an academic known as Saffron Chomsky in RSS Circle who leads a think tank affiliated with the BJP’s parent organisation, argues that the opposition is not what troubles the party. The real concern, he says, is that the public and its own supporters are not rising to defend it: “some are opposing, some are silent, some are just sitting at home.”

That diagnosis matters because it cannot be dismissed as partisan. It describes a base problem, not a rival problem.

The report adds weight to it. Coalition partners complain of rarely being consulted, and the BJP is described as leaning on state levers at the cost of political dynamism. Crowd control can quiet a street, but it cannot restore enthusiasm.

For now, the strategy appears to be working. The test is whether silent supporters return.

Suppression buys time. Persuasion wins loyalty.

Is regime change a legitimate part of democratic protest, or does targeting constitutional institutions risk creating anarchy?

@AratiJ says the JP movement, which included the Jan Sangh, ABVP and RSS, was rooted in calls for regime change and reform, arguing that protest is part of democratic politics. @RajatSethi86 argues that targeting political leaders is different from deliberately undermining trust in constitutional institutions. @Bhavyanmurthy challenges Rajat Sethi’s views.

BJP’s Entire Propaganda Machine EXPOSED on LIVE TV! 🔥

NDTV puts the actual footage right in front of Richa Parashar, showing Rahul Gandhi guiding people and clearing a path in a packed corridor.

Richa’s defense? "Republic Bharat told me that Rahul Gandhi pushed me." 🤡

That one sentence exposes how cheap political hit jobs are manufactured in this country.

When hard video evidence refuses to bend to your script, you rely on friendly TV studios to invent an assault.

Shame on Richa Parashar! Shame on BJP!

[Arati Radhika Jerath @AratiJ]

We’ve reached a new low. In over four decades of journalism I have NEVER seen an MP being manhandled and beaten by the police in the heart of the capital with the entire media filming and recording.
Didn’t happen even during the Emergency. Shame on you, @DelhiPolice @BJP4India

[John Brittas @JohnBrittas]

A sctn of the media has reported that I was detained yesterday while participating in a protest. This is incorrect, could be inadvertent. I was merely speaking to the media without flouting any of the Delhi Police restrictions. Was well away from the barricades and did not even speak to any police officer. I was alone and strictly within the prohibitory numbers. I am still at a loss as to why the police and CRPF pounced on me. All of this is clearly visible on video..as almost all the media were present at the time.

[Arati Radhika Jerath @AratiJ]

It’s not an insurrection. It’s a protest that is allowed in a functioning democracy. Then why this level of crackdown? In trying to stop today’s protest the government has only given it more impetus!

[Neha Bora Team @NehaAisa]

Modi ji, you’ve already laid nails across the roads. Now, all that’s left is to lay landmines too!

Finally a sane voice amid the nasty barbs flying around. Thank you @GauravPandhi for trying to restore sanity and focus. @INCIndia

[Gaurav Pandhi @GauravPandhi]

It is encouraging to see more citizens realise that resisting this regime is not merely the Congress's burden. It is their democratic responsibility too.

We have spent years raising the alarm while many mocked, dismissed or ignored us. But this moment demands a larger view.

India's freedom movement was not one protest, one organisation or one leader. It became a national force through countless acts of resistance, large and small, across the country, many of them not formally linked to the Congress.

Those who joined the freedom movement in the 1920s, 1930s or 1940s did not come because the Congress had failed. They came because the movement had widened, they realised their responsibility and there was room for them.

That is how movements grow. People stop waiting for permission and begin taking ownership.

We do not need one new voice. We need hundreds and thousands. Some will succeed, some will falter and some may even change sides. Movements are rarely neat. Their strength lies in widening the circle of resistance until fear changes sides.

Let us welcome every sincere voice that joins this fight, encourage them and at the same time not dismiss those who sounded the alarm when doing so carried a huge cost.

This is not a contest for credit. It is a struggle to save democracy.

Keep moving, everyone.

[Arati Radhika Jerath @AratiJ]

Well said @NehaAisa. No time for fighting within when the real fight is outside. This is the time to come together and stay together.

[Neha Bora Team @NehaAisa]

BJP doesn’t even need to do much when its opponents are busy fighting each other. Congress and AAP supporters attacking each other and CJP are only creating more problems for their own side and making BJP’s job easier.

The widest-reaching impact of @IndianExpress' Election Commission investigation yet.

10 days after our investigation into the rupture inside the Election Commission, the poll watchdog has told all 20 states where SIR is over to run a “special drive” to bring back voters “left out” of the rolls.

State CEOs have been told to identify voters deleted as unmapped or for “logical discrepancy” and that BLOs should go house to house to help bring them back. They will use Form 6 to apply for inclusion of such “left out” voters.

And the question added to Form 6 in July, asking whether your parents were on the last SIR roll, which one Commissioner called “unauthorised/illegal,” now applies only during the “SIR phase.”

What does that mean? In the 20 states where SIR is over, “left out” voters and first-time voters will use the plain statutory Form 6, without the question seeking details of their family’s link to the last SIR.
