@ptrmadurai@mkstalin Interest payments are the highest in the country. Would we be able to see a significant reduction in the fiscal deficit during this budget? Also, until the 3rd qtr only 48% of budgeted CAPEX was spent. Please throw some light on this sir. @ptrmadurai
In an unusually combative letter, Tata Trusts Chairman Noel Tata and trustees Darius Khambata, Neville N #Tata and Bhaskar Bhat have questioned the credibility of #Srinivasan and Singh’s opposition to the Trusts’ stand on Tata Sons. The four trustees effectively tell the two vice-chairmen: you cannot first participate in unanimous decisions to keep #TataSons unlisted and then suddenly champion listing without taking the matter back to the Trusts.
#TataTrusts feud: #NoelTata, other trustees call out Srinivasan, Singh

"The more power a man acquires...the more he depends on other people for information...yet through fear or awe or self-preservation, those people often become less willing to tell him what they think he doesn’t want to hear, leaving him increasingly insulated from reality" https://t.co/BBBAPWFXJ2
Behind the curtain, the two Election Commissioners who have gone against Gyanesh Kumar privately are themselves close to Amit Shah. He had a direct hand in their appointments.
This is an Internal Fight, don’t fall for it. The information was leaked to put Gyanesh on a leash.
There are 196 tribes on Earth that still refuse all contact with outsiders. Brazil has 115 of them, more than any country, and its government flies planes over their villages on purpose.
The flyovers exist because of a brutal catch in how Brazil protects land. Forest only gets shielded as Indigenous territory if FUNAI, the Indigenous affairs agency, can prove isolated people actually live there. No proof, and loggers and miners move in. So agents photograph longhouses and gardens from the air, confirm the tribe exists, and never land.
The word "uncontacted" hides the real history. Most of these groups descend from people who met the outside world during the rubber boom a century ago, when enslavement and disease killed roughly 90% of western Amazonia's Indigenous population. Their ancestors ran deeper into the forest and never came back out.
The ones who did come out show why.
The Nahua in Peru were contacted in 1984 after oil exploration opened their land. Half of them were dead within a few years, mostly from colds and flu. The Matis in Brazil were contacted in 1978. Five years later, 87 of them were left. The Panará lost 80% of their people in the eight years after a highway was bulldozed through their forest.
A respiratory bug that costs you three days on the couch can erase half a village with no immunity to it.
So Brazil settled on the strangest conservation policy on Earth. Prove they exist. Guard the borders. Never say hello.

@IndianGems_ That’s what irks me the most, isn’t it? With the political capital & institutional power Modi has enjoyed, India had a historic opportunity to fully capitalise on its demographic dividend. Even a reasonably competent push shd have generated enormous long-term economic gains. Sad.
GDP: Dr. Arvind Subramanian Delivers a Body Blow to the Official Narrative
(a) Govt has created a fundamental trust deficit (b) GDP numbers are disconnected from reality (c) Why macro-indicators were poor in the past, yet GDP was high?
The GDP Challenger Is Here
For years, former CEA Dr. Arvind Subramanian has been a powerful voice questioning the credibility of India’s GDP numbers.
Having examined India’s growth data under the microscope for over a decade, Dr. Subramanian’s commentaries on the subject carry unusual weight.
Today he enters the ongoing GDP debate along with Abhishek Anand and Josh Felman.
EXCERPTS:
Govt is Correct on Face Value
The Ministry of Statistics (MoSPI)’s argument is correct on the technicalities. GDP numbers of Q1FY27 (new base, new methodology) cannot be compared to Q1FY26 (old base, old methodology).
But then why are people doubtful?
Govt Faces Trust Deficit
a. Govt’s handling of data has created a fundamental trust deficit. During the demonetisation shock (86% cash withdrawn) in 2016-17, the official data showed GDP has risen to a dizzy level of 8.2%. That was the beginning of distrust.
b. Examples: The census has been delayed. The 2017 consumption survey was withdrawn. Covid deaths were significantly understated. Open defecation related claims were exaggerated.
c. With this track record, the public has become doubtful about the govt’s claims. The burden of proof has passed on to the govt to demonstrate the integrity of its data.
d. Govt has still not explained why Q1FY26 GDP was revised down by 7% (an extraordinary revision compared to historical data.)
e. Govt has not released a long back series to explain this revision. Unusually, the govt has not even announced the standard committee to calculate this series.
Decoupled from Ground Reality
a. During the quarter of 7.8% GDP growth (Q1FY27), April and May 2026 were months of shortages.
Fuel was being rationed, travel was subdued, restaurants & other businesses were buying LPG in black, wage & employment had slowed, stock market was sagginng, and currency had crumbled.
b. It is hard to understand how the economy could have done so well in the face of the global energy shock.
Despite fiscal stimulus and increase in exports, the damage from 32% jump in import bill was far greater. That was the RBI’s view, which had estimated that the economy had slowed in Q1FY27.
c. In these circumstances, it would have been impressive if India had merely managed to sustain its previous growth rate. But when the numbers came in, the GDP had accelerated by almost full one percent to 7.8%.
d. More Unsolved Puzzles: If the economy was booming, why did nominal net GST revenue grow just 5% (even allowing for GST rate cuts)?
Why did import volumes fall? How could mfg deflator be negative when RBI data shows business margins actually improved?
e. Govt should release the complete “Sources and Methods” document, which details how GDP is calculated and revised.
This document exists, and it has always been released in the past. Let independent economists examine the document and reassure the public about the govt’s data.
The Final Question
The govt and its supporters argue in favour of Q1 GDP growth of 7.8% citing strong macro-indicators.
If these macro-indicators have led to 7.8% GDP growth, how was 7 to 8% GDP growth achieved in the past years with several much weaker macro-indicators (notably, sales, trade, electricity, investment)?
You cannot use one measuring tape for today, and another measuring tape for the past to suit your convenience.
Data and charts are available in Dr. Subramanian’s published paper @arvindsubraman@arabicatrader
I explain analytical base of my conclusion that GDP growth in Q1 in 2026-27 in current price is 2.6% and in real terms close to 0. There are still messier distortions in sectoral performance with manufacturing and consumption witnessing negative growth. https://t.co/pvsjXlAdcq
His friend from upstream who called him to warn him about the flash floods and his quick thinking and decisive leadership saved the lives of everyone. He basically saved a generation of Nepalese 🙏
What Rahul Gandhi did in Pune was a qualitatively different and fundamental kind of politics - most probably one leg of it. Likely that he has been trying to get to this for a long time. The attempt is to shape the way people think and feel rather than just the way they vote in the next election. More strategy than tactics, more conversation than exhortation or dictation. If it succeeds, it could lead to a more enduring kind of change. Like what Congress did during the Independence movement or what the reformers and Communists did in Kerala in the last century or what the Dravidian movement accomplished in Tamilakam.
INTERESTING: Prime Minister’s Citizen Assistance and Relief in Emergency Situations (PM CARES) Fund, which was set up in March 2020 during COVID to deal with emergency/distress situations, has accumulated a corpus of Rs 8,452 crore by end of FY 2024-25, but just Rs 87 lakh was spent, as per audit reports released. Still NO information on source of funds. PM CARES has so far refused to divulge any details under RTI Act. 🙏
Jantar Mantar protests did a world of good to India and Indians. It empowered students across states. It focussed on education as a need, a demand and a right that should be fought for. Indian students are done waiting. A wave of protests have hit UP, Bihar, Rajasthan, MP, Maharashtra & Jharkhand etc.
In Fatehpur, Uttar Pradesh, about 1,500 students, Classes 6-12, staged a 6-hour sit-in at Sarvodaya Inter College. No fans, no library, no computer lab, unsafe drinking water, broken desks. Officials came calling within a day.
In Gays, Bihar, A government school with a broken hand pump, dead fans, shattered benches. Students protested and refused to speak to a junior official. They demanded the District Magistrate himself show up. He did.
In Jalore, Rajasthan, students locked the gates themselves, demanding teachers for grades 1-3 that simply weren’t there.
In Barmer’s Ramsar school, same story. Kids literally not being taught subjects due to staff shortages.
Across MP, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, Similar walkouts reported. Same core demands echoing across states: functional fans, clean water, hygienic toilets, teachers actually in the classroom.
What Jantar Mantar protests achieved is exceptional. India is discussing education, faculty shortages, unfairness, paper leaks, lack of school infrastructure. None of these demands are unreasonable and the minimum a public school owes a child. The fact it took a viral sit in to get it fixed is the real story.
I only wish this continues. We should continue to bring student issues to the forefront. Empower them with coverage, conversations. This can’t be allowed to fade as a one week news cycle. Keep asking. Keep covering. About vacant teacher posts in your district? What happened to the school infrastructure budget? Tag your local officials.
Don’t let this fade.
Please don’t let it fade.
