Saharon Shelah and number 4, a thread.
Shelah is an incredibly prolific mathematician working mostly in mathematical logic who has (co-)authored around 1500 papers so far. His other superpower is the ability to discover number 4 where it has absolutely no reason to be. 1/32
My book Huge Numbers is out today (in UK) with @BasicBooksUK !
Ian Stewart says: "This fascinating exploration of the giants of the mathematical world is clear, informative, and immensely readable. Wonderful!” 1/2

Postdoc position in Cambridge with Julia Wolf:
Julia is a phenomenal researcher and a wonderful collaborator. She is advertising a 2-year postdoc at the interface of additive combinatorics and model theory.

1/ ANNOUNCING 🎬
MARYAM: The Mirror and the Map, a feature film about Fields Medalist Maryam Mirzakhani (the first woman to win the Fields Medal).
After The Man Who Knew Infinity, writer/director Matt Brown, Manjul Bhargava & I are reuniting as associate producers.
Maryam Mirzakhani's loss is still deeply felt in the math community. It was a beautiful moment for me to see her receive the Fields medal in Seoul in 2014.
It's only later that I learned her inspiring story. Really happy that Ken and the team are bringing it to the big screen!

I am recruiting a PhD student to work with me, Peter Cholak, Anand Pillay, and Andy Yang @pentagonalize on transformers and logic/model theory (or related topics). If you are interested, please email me with "FLaNN" in the subject line!

@ElliotGlazer@littmath There'd have to be a problem about number 4 :) I'd be curious to participate in the discussion about concrete numeric answers in mathematical logic. At the very least there are questions about calculating some model theoretic invariants in particular structures of interest.
There will be a Very Informal Gathering of Logicians (VIG 2025) at UCLA, Fri, Feb 7 to Sun, Feb 9, 2025. The 22nd in a series of biennial logic meetings at UCLA, this event honors Alexander Kechris on the occasion of his formal retirement from Caltech.

I'm visiting @CarnegieMellon for a week, and giving a talk tomorrow, on some interplay of mathematical logic, combinatorics and theoretical machine learning:

Margaret wanted time to consider his proposition and thus began an uncomfortable dance between them, which contributed to Ramsey's depressive moods in early 1924; as a result, he travelled to Vienna for psychoanalysis. "
Wikipedia on Frank Ramsey:
"In 1923, Ramsey was befriended by Geoffrey and Margaret Pyke, then on the point of founding the Malting House School in Cambridge; the Pykes took Ramsey into their family, taking him on holiday and asking him to be the godfather of their young son.
but with an awful conflict in my mind. After about an hour I said (she was wearing her horn spectacles and looking superlatively beautiful in the Burne Jones style) 'Margaret will you fuck with me?'
