The only borrowers who wouldn’t have gotten forgiveness would be those in states that sued states( Missouri, Nebraska etc). And the conservative states suing would have had to explain to their voters why they blocked student debt relief only for them.
Riddle me this - but for the now unconstitutional overreach of a nationwide injunction, student loan borrowers would have received legally valid debt relief before the Supreme Court could rule.
BREAKING: A federal court has ordered the release of Mahmoud Khalil if the government doesn’t appeal by Friday morning, dealing a major setback to the Trump administration’s efforts to detain and deport non-citizens over protected speech.
The court had already ruled that Khalil was being targeted under a likely unconstitutionally vague law that let Secretary of State Marco Rubio decide, on a whim, that a non-citizen’s presence in the U.S. “would compromise a compelling United States foreign policy interest.”
The idea that a college student’s peaceful participation in pro-Palestinian protests could qualify was always far-fetched. The court recognized Khalil had no way of knowing his speech could get him deported. And the government produced no evidence that Khalil engaged in any violent or unlawful activity.
The court today rejected the government’s backup claim — that Khalil left out information in his green card application — concluding it was just a cover to deport him for other reasons. Expert evidence submitted to the court, and never rebutted by the Trump administration, established that lawful permanent residents are almost never detained for such omissions.
The court’s ruling confirms what many long suspected: Khalil was targeted not for his actions, but for his opinions.
Thanks for the thoughtful question.
First, my endorsement of a candidate in November is mine alone. Forwardists may have different takes and I respect them. That’s kind of core to us that we respect different people’s points of view.
Second, we are pushing for a system that would allow us to vote our true preferences. I.e. rank an Independent candidate first, another candidate second, get rid of the spoiler effect, etc. Heck in a system like that I might be running right now. I’m going to keep working at making it happen for everyone’s sake because I think it’s vital for our future.
Third, there are races beyond the presidential. Forward is investing in the infrastructure to enable independents to compete and form parties and get ballot access in different states. We are also backing dozens of local candidates which is where we think the opportunities are. We are a multi-cycle endeavor and that’s the way we approach things.
I of course appreciate RFK’s goal of trying to move on from a duopoly that isn’t serving people’s ends. I share that goal.
But I’m also a #MATH guy. And in my view the most likely scenario right now is a Donald Trump victory. I personally think that Trump represents an end-state set of affairs that would be bad for institutions and the prospects of reform, competition, democracy and accountability. I got into public life in part to keep that from happening.
In my opinion the best thing that I and others can do is to fend Trump off and Kamala Harris and the Democrats have the best chance of doing that. So that’s who I’m supporting. I believe it’s the right thing to do.
I’ll also be in Nevada, Colorado and other states backing ballot initiatives in November that I’m very excited about. In some of those places traditional partisans will probably be less pumped about my stance.
Each of us is going to do what we think is right in November and I respect people who line up on different sides. I have close friends and family who are Trump supporters and certainly RFK supporters. I shared what I’m doing because I know some people want to know.
Hopefully we can get to a point where our preferences can be truly expressed with no fear or recrimination in a vibrant and representative way. I and Forward will be toiling away to make that a reality. And hopefully when we get there we will be able to vote in different ways with respect and confidence that we share underlying goals and humanity, even if we might differ on the short-term path.
@harrisonjaime@JoeBiden Mr Harrison was the type of participation you mentioned expected? It seems there are way more than 14 million democrats in the United States. There are roughly 210 million registered voters and another 50-60 million eligible yet not registered.
