***True Story***
I heard that in an academic interview, a candidate presented a lot of work on #LLMs, #GenerativeAI. One person asked, "What is discriminative AI/models?"...followed by silence.

In Sweden, they call the external PhD examiner an Opponent, and the job is to publicly challenge the thesis defender. The Opponent doesn't grade, there is a separate committee for that, who grades the defender based on their interaction with the Opponent. 1/2
