Kosovo authorities have begun excavating a suspected wartime mass grave in the north of the country, where remains and clothing have already been found.

In 1999, the Serbian regime carried out an organized operation to conceal war crimes by moving bodies to mass graves.

In our latest op-ed, Albanians for America argues that this dialogue is not a favor to Kosovo, but the natural recognition of an alliance tested in war, strengthened in peace, and sustained by the overwhelming support of Kosovo’s citizens.

Serbian Minister Snezana Paunovic’s disgraceful support for ethnic cleansing in Kosovo is a stain on Serbia’s Government.

People in their thirties today remember the atrocities committed on them and their families by Milosevic’s forces.

The statement by Serbian Government Minister Snežana Paunović that “if she were Slobodan Milošević, she would have ethnically cleansed Kosovo” is unacceptable, threatening, and a grave insult to the thousands of victims of the war in Kosovo.

Ethnic cleansing is a crime against humanity. It was a policy carried out by Serbia against the Albanian population of Kosovo in 1999.

As a result of the organized campaign conducted by the forces of Slobodan Milošević’s regime, nearly one million Kosovo Albanians were expelled from their homes in 1999 and forced to seek refuge in Albania, North Macedonia, and other countries.

More than 13,000 people were killed during the war in Kosovo, the overwhelming majority of them Albanian civilians. Among them were more than 1,400 children whose lives were taken by a policy aimed at subjugating and expelling an entire people.

Even today, nearly 1,500 people remain forcibly disappeared, and their families continue to wait for justice and answers about the fate of their loved ones.

Such statements demonstrate that the rhetoric that fueled the tragedies of the 1990s has not entirely disappeared from Serbia’s political landscape. The glorification or justification of ethnic cleansing policies poses a threat to peace and reconciliation in the Balkans.

The international community and all democratic forces must clearly condemn any attempt to relativize, deny, or glorify the crimes of the past.

The future of the Balkans cannot be built on the denial of victims, but on truth, justice, and respect for human rights.

A year ago, I came close to losing my life after suffering pulmonary emboli a few weeks after giving birth.

Blood clots and pulmonary embolisms are the number one cause of maternal deaths in our country, yet the review into maternity services does not currently plan to help tackle this.

I look forward to working with the Health Secretary to change that. Lives depend on it.

Historic Milestone for the Albanian-American Community

Albanians for America congratulates Diamant Hysenaj on advancing to the general election for New York’s 14th Congressional District, becoming the first Albanian American since Joe DioGuardi to lead a major party ticket for federal office.

This milestone reflects the continued growth of Albanian-American civic engagement and participation in public service across the United States. Regardless of political affiliation, the increasing presence of Albanian Americans in the democratic process is an important achievement for our community.

New York’s 14th Congressional District, which includes parts of the Bronx and Queens, will hold its general election on November 3, 2026.

We congratulate Diamant Hysenaj on this accomplishment and wish him success as he continues his campaign.

Albanians For America was pleased to meet yesterday for lunch with Chris Gober, Republican candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives in Texas' 10th Congressional District.

Our relationship with Chris goes back to the very beginning of AFA. Through his law firm, Lex Politica, Chris has served as legal counsel to our organization and played an important role in helping establish the foundation that has allowed AFA to grow into a leading national Albanian-American advocacy organization. We are grateful for his friendship, guidance, and continued support.

During our discussion, Chris shared his vision for the future of America and highlighted the incredible technology ecosystem developing throughout the Austin region. He spoke about the importance of ensuring the United States remains the global leader in artificial intelligence, robotics, space exploration, advanced manufacturing, and emerging technologies. His focus on innovation, economic competitiveness, and national security reflects the type of forward-thinking leadership needed to keep America at the forefront of the 21st century.

AFA believes that America's leadership in these fields is critical not only for economic growth, but also for maintaining our strategic advantage and protecting our national security in an increasingly competitive world. Conversations that bring together community leaders, policymakers, and innovators are essential as we prepare for the opportunities and challenges ahead.

We thank Adrian Doko, Nino Rata, and Gino Mulliqi for joining the meeting and sharing their perspectives as Albanian Americans on the importance of civic engagement, economic opportunity, and strengthening the relationship between our communities and elected leaders.
