it definitely doesn't shield them from micrometeor impacts and that would be the primary source of destruction over that time period
thermal cycling over 100 million years would also fatigue and eventually break apart metal
strong solar wind conditions and CMEs distort the magnetosphere enough that GEO satellites would be exposed to particles from the solar wind
@ArgonGruber@ZyMazza also, the Silurian hypothesis says nothing about how long the pre-human civilization survived for, only how long before us it would have had to have existed for it to be undetectable today
@ArgonGruber@ZyMazza no, nothing guarantees that. there is no law that says a civilization must progress continuously. human civilizations have collapsed several times within recorded history alone, we have no idea how often they collapsed before and no data on a hypothetical non-human civilization
any oxidizable metal like iron, steel, aluminum, copper, etc. will corrode. a lot of it will be gone in a few hundred to a few thousand years unless its a very large chunk of metal or preserved in an environment that prevents oxidation but even then after 10 thousand years to 100 thousand nothing recognizable would be left
modern concrete structures use rebar reinforcement which makes them susceptible to spalling as water infiltrates the structure so they would also crumble along a similar timespan
buildings made of large, natural stone would last the longest but would still be destroyed by natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and eventually natural erosion from rain and wind, and in northern hemispheres they will be repeatedly crushed by kilometers of ice as glaciers advance and retreat
radioactive elements decay, plastics break down and burn, glass is crushed back into sand and everything is eventually swallowed by the Earth as the crust is subducted
after 100 million years everything on the current surface of the Earth will have eroded and washed away as sediment to be deposited in the oceans where it will slowly subduct into the mantle
@ChaletMocha@ZyMazza the rough minimum date for a Silurian civilization is more than 55 million years ago but most thought around it focuses on a theoretical civilization more than 100 million years ago
You shouldn't lump Hancock and the Silurian hypothesis together. Hancock focuses on human civilizations that may have existed 12,000+ years ago while the Silurian hypothesis is about *non-human* civilizations that may have existed 50 million - 350 million years ago. There's a massive difference between the two.
you don't even need to assume biodegradable when you're talking tens to hundreds of millions of years
the Earth itself will grind everything to dust and subduct it into the mantle, new seas and coastal erosion will sink entire nations to unreachable depths, metal will be reduced to a smear of oxidation cemented into solid rock and even radioactive isotopes will naturally degrade and be scattered until they are no longer detectable
if you think bones would fossilize then think again, how many humans are buried under mudslides or other conditions that would promote fossilization?
a sentient species buries its dead in soil or stone tombs or cremates them and they do their best to recover any bodies from natural disasters so the chances of finding even a fragment like we have for our earliest ancestors is effectively zero
life has existed long enough for not just one previous advanced civilization but dozens, perhaps hundreds if the period between them was shorter than that between us and the last since all of them would be undetectable to us
Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus are invasive species that were introduced to North America by human activity
they are also the primary disease vectors for mosquito born diseases that affect humans
they are also the ones that prefer to feed on humans, are active during the day instead of only at dusk and dawn, and prefer breeding in small containers of stagnant water instead of swamps so are more frequently found close to human habitation
eliminating these species would simply be restoring North American ecology to the way it was before and would probably be beneficial for the native food chain
you're not alone
this happened a bit earlier for me than you which I honestly take to mean you were that much ahead of me in skill.
I won't mince words, it's a rough ride. I still haven't found my way past it as far as creating software goes. I'm not sure I will.
for now I've focused on non-software pursuits. I've fully jumped the tracks and found other ways of earning money. for personal expression I'm exploring a lot of physical media, gardening, music, reading, and time away from computers.
I still have ideas I want to see implemented and at some point I will come back and employ Opus/GPT to do the work but at the moment I feel like I need to step away.
the reason why is that it feel as though I'm staring at a wall when I try to imagine the future. that wall is the curve of progress as it approaches the asymptote.
it makes me wonder if this is our generation's hydrogen bomb. a fact by its mere presence which makes the existence of tomorrow uncertain.
Davos globalists just want what all unimaginative wealthy business owners and politicians want: predictable outcomes
they want to be able to own property and do business anywhere in the world and travel there easily so that they can either host or attend gatherings of other people in their social class
they want all of the businesses and governments that they deal with to operate on the same principles
they want to be free from legal entanglements and prosecution due to the peculiarities of any particular nation
they want their personal lives and business dealings to remain out of the public eye as much as possible
this translates into conditions that are rather miserable for everyone else but affords them a seamless experience and consistent lifestyle regardless of where they are in the world
a hole carries information
if you look within it you see nothing
if you look at what surrounds it you see its negative, the impression it has left
by examining the boundary you can determine the shape of that which is missing
the mistake we make is trying to fill the hole with any random trash that comes along when what we need is finely carved marble and cast bronze to make a perfect fit
Schopenhauer continues to be proven correct
"Intellectual talking and ideas are fit only for intellectual society; in ordinary society they are positively loathed, for here in order to go down well it is absolutely necessary to be dull and narrow-minded."
"...there is nothing of which a man is prouder than of intellectual ability, for it is this that gives him his commanding place in the animal world. It is an exceedingly rash thing to let any one see that you are decidedly superior to him in this respect, and to let other people see it too; because he will then thirst for vengeance, and generally look about for an opportunity of taking it by means of insult, because this is to pass from the sphere of intellect to that of will — and there, all are on an equal footing as regards the feeling of hostility."
@theo@noaudiophile obviously, higher education is not the problem since the world is clamoring to be admitted to American colleges
are American public schools truly incapable of producing enough of their own to fill those seats fought over by international students?
I dreamt I was buying antique wall sconces from an old Russian engineer in a quaint town by a lake in the mountains when everyone ran outside to hear an announcement of war being declared and then I saw burning fragments falling from the sky dropping out of the low clouds onto the forested valley slope where they started forest fires.
I think I was paying with a 5000 ruble note and the announcement mentioned China.
really weird dream, usually don’t get ones like this
what mean?
