(Don't think I've ever so guilty as when I removed the pages. Awaiting punishment from the Book God's for being a negligent book parent. Anything but the heatwave not ending...)
While I personally believe heatwaves have no redeeming features, I think this one has spared me a decision about whether to destroy a book binding for scanning. Laid the book flat and it just fell apart...
QCing. Have to disagree with both the translator and reviewer who think it's fine to translate two terms with acronyms EOT and EOS both as "end of study". (If anyone sees my will to live... please look after it Friday?)
QCing a translated file already delivered by two people (translator, reviser). All paragraphs are set to allow line breaks in the middle of words. Essential for JP, sure. But no-one thought to change it for EN?
Reviewing. Pregnant male rats, teratogenic pregnancies, learned societies that don't exist and 30% not being significantly different from 0%. (Missing a decimal point there.) Taking much longer than the wordcount looked like it should...

Programs like Google Translate and DeepL are indeed substitutes for translation, but in my opinion they are POOR substitutes.
It's an automatic dictionary lookup on a tremendous scale, without any of the thought, understanding, or care that human-generated translation contains.

@Lillie_Langtry@ChrisDurbanFR "Does this even need to be translated?" might have negative short term consequences (project cancelled) but positive long term effects. How clients react to questions is also interesting information!
Hugely important issue for translators. A direct path to premium clients -- and one that separates genuinely skilled linguists from the word replacers/automats. We should all be asking more questions https://t.co/FswZfPgUUl
Why do people hold negative views about science esp. when serious issues, eg climate change, affect them? In @PLOSBiology Fonseca et al. @GenSocUK found people with extreme views (negative or positive) were often overconfident of their knowledge of science https://t.co/h9zm51SnFN
More food for thought (from G Marcus) that mirrors many linguists' experience of automated xlation sol'ns.
