Organic agriculture plays an important role in reducing the environmental impact of farming and protecting biodiversity.

Organic certification standards restrict the use of synthetic pesticides and fertilizers, helping preserve soil fertility and promote environmentally responsible production.

As part of COP17, Filip Ashikyan, Director of ECOGLOBE Certification Body, and Gnel Nazanyan, Founder of Darman Organic Brand, discuss organic production practices, the importance of certification, and the role of sustainable agriculture in biodiversity conservation.

Armenia’s Spatial Data Infrastructure on the COP17 Agenda

A panel discussion titled “The Experience of the Republic of Armenia in Developing Spatial Data Infrastructure, Shaping the Legal Framework, and Applying Spatial Data” was held at the Armenia Pavilion during COP17.

The Head of the Cadastre Committee of the Republic of Armenia presented the Committee’s vision, strategy, and work carried out to develop the National Spatial Data Infrastructure.

Panelists discussed the role of spatial data in biodiversity conservation, the digitalization of public administration, and the improvement of public services, as well as the legislative and institutional development of the sector.

The discussion also covered adapting international best practices, the further development of Armenia’s Spatial Data Infrastructure, and the objectives being set with the support of the Asian Development Bank.

🌿 Promoting Human Rights-Based Approaches to Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use

As part of COP17, a discussion titled “Promoting Human Rights-Based Approaches to Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use” was held at the Armenia Pavilion in the Blue Zone.

Organized by the Council of Europe, the event focused on the protection of human rights in biodiversity conservation, the safety of environmental human rights defenders, and the meaningful participation of young people, Indigenous Peoples, and local communities.

Discussions also explored fair and inclusive approaches to nature conservation governance, as well as opportunities for international and regional cooperation to strengthen the integration of human rights principles into biodiversity policies.

Promoting Transparency and Public Participation in Biosafety

An international training session was held to promote transparency, access to information, and public participation in the field of biosafety.

Aram Meymaryan, Deputy Minister of Environment of Armenia, and Astrid Schomaker, Executive Secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity, delivered remarks during the event.

The discussions covered recent developments under the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, the Aarhus Convention, and the Escazú Agreement. Particular attention was given to access to environmental information, public participation in decision-making processes, and access to justice.

The importance of exchanging international experience and expanding cooperation was also emphasized to strengthen transparent and participatory decision-making mechanisms in the field of biosafety.

🖇 Rio Synergies: From Collaboration to Action
Convened by the Armenian COP17 Presidency, the session introduced the proposed Joint Declaration and aimed to build understanding and political support ahead of its planned endorsement by the Presidencies of the Rio Conventions on 28 October.

The Declaration seeks to accelerate implementation of the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework through enhanced cooperation that also advances climate and land-related objectives.

Three discussions connected institutional progress, practical implementation, and political leadership, exploring how the Declaration can help translate shared priorities into concrete action.
