The weather forecast for the next two weeks looks favourable for the summer crop-growing areas of South Africa.

There are prospects of rain -- see the coloured parts of the SA map.

This will nicely improve soil moisture and continue to benefit the 2023/24 summer crop plantings currently underway.

It would be excellent if more farmers planted crops even a bit earlier than usual this year so that by the time we hit the El Nio-induced low rains in 2024, the crop would already be in advanced stages.

This mainly applies to the regions in the west of South Africa that typically plant their grains and oilseeds from mid-November to December.

It would be good to be early this year.

The past weeks have nicely improved soil moisture in much of South Africa’s summer crop regions. The maize and soybean planting is underway and should benefit from the excellent soil moisture for germination and further growth.

The map shows NW in bad shape. But things aren’t that hectic. We have good soil moisture from the past seasons that should support planting.

Also, the South African Weather Service sees prospects of good showers until the end of the year, with El Nino impact set to be visible from early 2024.

So, I remain hopeful about the 2023/24 season.

We have essential data for release this Thursday in South Africa's agriculture — farmers' intentions to plant summer crops for the 2023/24 season.

We don't foresee significant adjustments from the 2022/23 total area planting of roughly 4, 4 million hectares.

Regarding specific crops, we could see a light decline in the white maize area, with sunflower seed taking a slightly bigger share in the far western regions of South Africa. The rest of summer crops may remain roughly similar to the last season.

With good soil moisture and possibly nice rains until the end of the year, one can only be optimistic about the season.

The weather risks are there but not major for the upcoming season, I think.
