Chemmani Mass Grave Exhumation — Phase 2: Day 8

The process took place under the supervision of Jaffna Magistrate A.A. Anandarajah, with the participation of Professor Raj Somadeva from the Department of Archaeology and Judicial Medical Officer Selliah Pranavan.

A total of 34 complete human skeletons have been exhumed so far. 06 more human skeletons have also been identified, among which two are suspected to be the remains of children.

June 28, Jaffna — Chemmani Mass Grave Exhumation, Second Phase – Day 3

The exhumation was carried out under the supervision of Jaffna Magistrate’s Court Judge A. Anandaraja. Judicial Medical Officer Dr. Pranavan Sellaiah and Archaeology Professor Raj Somadeva were also involved in today’s proceedings.

Three additional human skeletons were discovered during today’s exhumation, bringing the total number of skeletons identified so far to 27, of which 22 have been exhumed.

An application was submitted to the court by the Judicial Medical Officer requesting permission to conduct soil testing at the suspected site. The court granted approval, and experts from the Industrial Technology Institute (ITI), Colombo, are scheduled to carry out the soil test tomorrow.

Several locations suspected to contain human remains had previously been identified through satellite imagery. As per the court’s directive, these sites were also cleared and prepared for further investigation today.
