FEAR MAKES THE WOLF BIGGER THAN HE IS
~ German Proverb
A young professional came to therapy convinced that one presentation would ruin her career.
"What if I forget everything?" "What if people laugh?" "What if my boss thinks I'm incompetent?"
By the time she entered the conference room, the presentation wasn't her biggest problem anymoreโher fear was.
Interestingly, nothing catastrophic happened.
She wasn't perfect, but she did well enough.
The "wolf" wasn't imaginary. Public speaking can be challenging. But her fear had made the wolf much bigger than it really was.
At the same time, the opposite would have been equally unhelpful.
Ignoring her fear and saying, "I don't care. I'll just wing it," could have left her underprepared.
As psychologists, we often see that mental well-being lies between catastrophizing and carelessness.
โ Don't fear your fear.
โ Don't dismiss your fear.
โ Understand your fear.
Fear is not your enemy. Nor is it always your guide.
It is information.
Listen to it, question it, and respond wisely.
Now, I'd like to hear from you:
Has there been a time when your fear made a situation seem much worse than it actually turned out to be? Or has your fear ever protected you from making a mistake?
Share your experience in the comments. Your story might help someone else see their own "wolf" more clearly.

This is alarming from the perspective of balanced psychological growth of our children. Very disturbing. Peaceful protest against any discripency doesn't mean you get Liscence to use abusive illogical and foul language. Parents of such children must be identified and must be counseled for better parenting. @narendramodi@AmitShah it's the moral responsibility of the Government to look into correct psychological growth of the children so that they learn to disagree or protest using civil and logical ways.
