Kakamega Forest is Kenya’s sole remaining true tropical rainforest a precious surviving piece of the ancient Guineo-Congolian rainforest that once covered large parts of Central Africa. Today, it stands as a living museum of natural history, preserving centuries of ecological richness within its lush canopy.
Covering more than 11,000 acres, Kakamega is one of Africa’s premier biodiversity hotspots. It hosts over 360 bird species, more than 400 kinds of butterflies, and seven primate species, including the elusive De Brazza’s monkey, locally known as Kalasinga. Several of these animals and plants are found nowhere else in Kenya, making the forest an irreplaceable site for conservation and scientific study.
For generations, local communities have relied on the forest for traditional herbal medicines, firewood, vines, bark, and other essential resources. This long-standing relationship highlights a deep interdependence yet it is also fragile. Unchecked human activities continue to put the forest under serious threat. Experts caution that without stronger conservation measures, Kakamega could vanish within the next 50 years.
Walking its shaded trails feels like stepping into another world. Towering indigenous trees, some centuries old, stretch skyward like ancient pillars. Dense greenery forms a living canopy overhead, while paths lead to scenic spots such as Buyangu Hill, where sweeping views of the forest stretch to the horizon. Crystal-clear streams wind through the undergrowth, and the air is filled with the calls of rare birds and the quiet pulse of undisturbed wildlife.
Places like Isiukhu Falls further reveal nature’s unhurried yet constant rhythm a gentle cascade that has flowed long before us and, we hope, will continue long after.
Kakamega is far more than a destination.
It is a powerful reminder of our connection to the natural world, the value of patience, and the urgent truth that what we choose not to protect today may simply not be there tomorrow.

If it weren’t for Nicolas Jackson missing every chance, we’d be up there competing with Liverpool. Time to expose the truth."
