PS4-era Japan Studio already served more as a brand than it did as a coherent group. Sony may be done with the brand, but Team Asobi is intact and Ueda, Toyama and their teams are also active independently. I'm sure we have more to see from all of them. (3/3)

What is missed here is not Japan Studio the developer, but the commitment to a particular culture of game development that thrives on experimental game design and is instantiated by the synergy between extremely creative, singular developers and original, valuable IP. (1/3)

Japan Studio's Nintendo-like culture was integral to early PlayStation DNA, but SIE's strategy has metamorphosed since. The studio's closure is a reflection of the shift to a more distributed organisational structure, not a push away from the types of games they made. (2/3)
