A former employee who was involved in Reliance’s sports ventures thought that Nita Ambani’s prominent role was the result of her being able to communicate the emotion around sport better than her husband. “Getting a lady, who helms the family, to be a part of it made more sense overall,” they said, “because of the fact that, if Mr Ambani would have done it, it would have been positioned as a business.” Reliance also wanted to promote women in sports, they added, recalling a business head saying at one meeting, “If a man sits and watches a sport, he just sits and watches, but if a woman sits and watches a sport, the entire family watches.”

Nita was not present at that year’s IPL auction and attended about a third of the matches in the first season. The following year, however, the tournafment was moved to South Africa because it clashed with the Indian general election. The former rival IPL executive said that Nita travelled to South Africa with around thirty friends. “Fifteen women used to come, and they used to recite bhajans in the stands.” After Mumbai Indians won their fourth title, a decade later, an Ambani family priest told the media that they performed the Chandi Paath, a collection of seven hundred verses dedicated to the goddess Durga, before every match.

"When the DSP first saw me, he immediately moved to slap me. I managed to step back just in time, and his hand missed my face. Furious, he shouted, “I’ll send you to jail for seven years. You’ve done too much. I’ll teach you a lesson.” He opened his office and brought out printouts of my stories and tweets. He started shouting abuses, not just at me but at everyone I had worked with. I just stood there. Then suddenly, he started slapping me. When I fell to the ground, he grabbed a lathi and began beating me, striking my hands and legs. He yelled, “Now come here and do push-ups!” I tried to smile, masking my fear, and said, “I can’t.” But he insisted. As soon as I started doing push-ups, he began beating me with the lathi on my back and buttocks. The pain was unbearable, and I writhed in agony. Then he called more officers, and they held me down while he kept hitting me. This went on for nearly an hour. After the beating, they threw me into the lock-up. I was not allowed to use the bathroom or have any water. I felt like I was dying from thirst and exhaustion," Sajad Gul said.

The interview volleys between heartbreaking and infuriating as Dr. Ahmad chokes up describing the children with missing limbs he’s treating on an hourly basis and then the total absence of basic medical supplies and how many are suffering from totally preventable illness and disease due to that.

He says he brought cases of donated supplies with him from the states and he was prohibited by the Israeli military from bringing anything other than clothes in a single suitcase into Gaza.
