A young boy became paralyzed after eating a slug as a result of a dare.

In 2010, a seemingly innocent dare forever changed the life of 19-year-old Sam Ballard. During a casual evening with friends in Sydney, Australia, Ballard made the fateful decision to consume a slug as a dare. Little did he know that this seemingly harmless act would lead to a tragic series of events.

Soon after ingesting the slug, Ballard started experiencing excruciating leg pain, which initially raised concerns of multiple sclerosis. However, medical investigations unveiled the shocking truth - Ballard had unknowingly ingested a slug infected with rat lungworm disease.

Rat lungworm disease is caused by a parasitic worm that typically inhabits the lungs of rats. The worm is passed on to other creatures, including slugs, when they come into contact with rat feces. Once ingested by a slug, the parasite can survive and develop within its body.

Tragically, the path the worm takes in a human body differs from that in a rat. Instead of following the normal digestive route, the worm can migrate to the brain, leading to a condition known as eosinophilic meningitis. This condition triggers inflammation in the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord.

Ballard's health rapidly deteriorated, and he fell into a coma that lasted an astounding 420 days. When he eventually regained consciousness, the devastating consequences became apparent - he was paralyzed from the neck down. Unable to move or speak, Ballard relied on a feeding tube to sustain himself. The once vibrant young man who had eagerly embraced life was now trapped in a body that could no longer respond to his will.

Despite ongoing medical interventions and the unwavering support of his loved ones, Ballard's injuries ultimately proved fatal, and he passed away, leaving behind a haunting reminder of the tragic consequences of an ill-advised dare.

Very useful & insightful discussion and imp recommendations. It’s alarming & seriously concerning that 23 million children in Pakistan are out of school‼️
Child welfare has to be ensured by creating awareness in the society, implementing Child Protection laws, and adopting a reliable monitoring and data collection mechanism. As a suggestion, it could be beneficial for every child to receive a digital card at birth that is linked to their basic rights such as health, vaccination, nutrition and education etc @ReplyTariq @NadraPak
Children are our future and we have a collective responsibility to protect them from all kind of vulnerabilities, violence, abuses, discrimination and exploitation, it has to be ensured that every child gets a safe & secure childhood.
