1. I'm legit shocked by the design of @Meta's new notification informing us they want to use the content we post to train their AI models. It's intentionally designed to be highly awkward in order to minimise the number of users who will object to it. Let me break it down.

The writing is consistent with paper mills.

People write up the fake papers, borrowing terms from earlier ones without understanding them, and editors and reviewers don't think that they're reviewing something fraudulent, chalk up errors to spelling, etc.

So the lit goes.

Some of the 420 reviewed studies just featured additional misspelling—that's OK

But 235 of them differentiated the misspelled cell lines from the original one they were a misspelling of, and these 235 papers didn't provide any standard evidence that the misspelled lines are real

It's widely known that there's a lot of fraud in cancer research.

A new study looked at misspelled cell lines and found that some subsequent studies (mostly by Chinese authors) claimed to use and described experiments with those nonexistent cell lines.

I was confused why would they sign up to it if they have their own? Well, because they signed up to it before they had their own and used it to build their version of it! 😂
