"As one of his first forays into crypto, Twitter's founder Jack Dorsey sought to build TBD—a new identity and trust layer for the Internet—intended to run exclusively on peer-to-peer rails, integrated with established Web2 services.
Many thought TBD sounded a lot like the Web3 decentralized identity service ENS, but Dorsey begged to differ. As an adamant Bitcoiner—a word that today is synonymous with a crypto skeptic—he felt the need to separate from the crowd, ensuring TBD would never be seen as just another Web3 project.
Specifically, Dorsey realized that Web3—a vision for a decentralized internet built on open protocols and blockchains, incorporating identity, finance, and social layers—was surprisingly not the kind of system he sought to build.
He recognized that the reality of Web3 was fundamentally opposed to his vision—it was incompatible with the Web's existing infrastructure and engineered to replace it.
With decentralization being TBD's professed and uncompromising goal, he sought to build on Bitcoin. In his eyes, this alone made TBD "not Web3," necessitating a new term for this kind of system.
To that end, Dorsey half-jokingly coined the term "Web5," partly as a jab at Web3 and partly as a throwback that pays homage to HTML5, the basis of today's Internet and the last significant effort to evolve the Web some 15 years ago.
Judging by TBD's whitepaper, Dorsey saw Web5 as a peer-to-peer network that leverages Bitcoin as the base consensus layer and Lightning as a payment network. It centers around three pillars: 1) self-owned decentralized identifiers, 2) verifiable credentials, and 3) decentralized web nodes for storing data and relaying messages.
“On the web today, identity and personal data have become the property of third parties. Web5 brings decentralized identity and data storage to your applications. It lets devs focus on creating delightful user experiences while returning ownership of data and identity to individuals,” TBD’s website reads.
Considering the Twitter Files—a series of releases of select internal Twitter, Inc. documents showing how the company had been coerced to censor critical content—and TBD’s stated goals, we think it’s fair to assume that Dorsey essentially wanted to build “freedom tech.”"
