A light time with my granddaughter. The kind of ordinary afternoon that feels like a gift. Watching her laugh, holding her hand, I'm reminded how precious these simple moments are. And even as my heart feels full, it also turns outward, to the families around the world whose days are shadowed by conflict. I think of the parents trying to keep their children safe, the homes left behind, the childhoods interrupted too soon. So I hold both feelings together: gratitude for what I have, and sorrow for what others are enduring.

And I want to say this to the leaders in conflict: please come back to your senses. There is always a political solution. Peace is the best medicine. I wish every child, everywhere, could know the same lightness I saw today. A safe place to sleep, a hand to hold, a day without fear, and the freedom to simply be a kid.

እህቴ፣ ከ40 ዓመት በላይ የማውቃት ታማኝ ጓደኛዬ አምባሳደር ቆንጂት ሥነ ጊዮርጊስ ከተለየችን ሳምንታት፣ 40 ቀናት አለፉ።
የኢትዮጵያ ሰንደቅ ዓላማን ባውለበለበችበት አገር ሕክምናዋን ጨርሳ ወደምትወዳት፣ ዕድሜ ልኳን ወዳገለገለቻት አገርዋ ለመመለስ የነበራት ተስፋ ትልቅ ነበር።
ሁለት ጊዜ ቪየና ሄጄ ብዙ ተጨዋውተናል። ስንለያ�� ያለችኝ እርሷን የተሰማት ነገር እንዳለ ያሳያል። ስጠብቃት የነበረው በብዙ ተስፋ ነበር።
ቆንጅቴ፣ዜጎቻችን፣ ሌሎች አፍሪካውያንና የብዙ አገር ዜጎች ..መልዕክት ሲልኩ፣ ሲያለቅሱ፣ አድናቆታቸውን ሲገልጹ..ነው የከረሙት። የሥራ ባልደረቦችሽና አለቃሽ የነበሩ የአገሪቱ መሪዎች ሸኝተውሻል። ቀና ብለሽ የስንቱን ሕይወት እንደነካሽ ባየሽ ነበር!!
በየቀኑ የምንነጋገረውን፣ምክሮችሽን፣ጥላ ከለላነትሽን...ነው ያጣሁት። ከፍተኛ ሃዘን ነው። በአንድ መስመር መልዕክት የማይገለጽ።ዝም ያሰኘኝ።
ሆኖም የአንቺ የተሟላና ዓላማ ያለው ሕይወት ከለቅሶ በላይ የሚከበር ነው። ጥረሽ ግረሽ ነው ው/ጉ የገባሽው። የ 53 ዓመት አገልግሎትሽ ነው በአግባቡ ሊከበር የሚገባው።ሌላ መለክያ ሊኖር አይችልም።

ወንዳች መካከል ብቸኛ ሴት አምባሳደር መሆን ችግር ነበር። አንቺ ስትመጪ በጋራ ታግለናል። አጠናክሮናል። ተነግሮ አያልቅም።
ቆንጅቴ አሁን ከማታውቂው እረፍት ጋር
እንደተለማመድሽ ተስፋ አለኝ። የማውቅሽን ያህል ግን ስትሯሯጪ፣ ስብሰ
ባ ስትመሪ ትታይኛለሽ።
እረፊ፣ ለፍተሻል። አኩርተሽናል። ነፍስሽን በአፀደ ገነት ያኑርልን።

On this day March 8, I pay tribute to all women, mothers and daughters who, every day, from home to their work place, from refugee to internally displaced camps, with courage and determination, fight for their children, their families, to build a more just and humane world.
It is a call for Rights, Justice and Action to dismantle all barriers to equal justice, discriminatory laws, weak legal protections, harmful practices…that erode the rights of women and girls.
May their strength, resilience and love continue to light our way.

Did the U.S. fund the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD) as President Trump stated?

“First Post” TV asked me that key question during last night’s live interview (video).

My response: No, the U.S. did not fund GERD. I believe the President was misinformed by his advisors.

Under both Republican and Democrat presidents, the U.S. policy has been not to fund GERD, neither directly nor indirectly.

Very much saddened by the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis. He was a moral voice of our time.
I had the distinct honor of hosting him, the first Pope from the Global South, at UNON, the only UN HQ in the Global South of which I was the first Director-General. We witnessed his wisdom, humility, compassion, care for the most vulnerable…
In his visionary address he warned that "the misuse & destruction of the environment are also accompanied by a relentless process of exclusion". That was in Nov 2015. His call for climate justice remains just as urgent.
